Apparently the alignment (or scaling?) is terrible, and that it's near impossible to get band 6.

Ohhh the alignment, the humanity of the alignment...

barely anyone gets a band 5 in the subject, let alone a band 6!

Last year I think only 54 people got a band 6 whilst less than 5% of people got over 80. You are much better off in advanced.

Fight them! Beg them and say you will work so hard, that you will improve. If you really want to do it, you can hopefully convince them.

Schools aren't meant to strictly dictate your sub choices, only way they can potentially if all the classes are full. But still have a go at getting in :)

My opinion is that standard doesn't scale well for a reason, people only pick it because they have to, and they aren't committed to it, therefore they distract and disturb others and ultimately bring down the marks of the class... People are much better off picking advanced if they want a better atar, but they should be committed and actually interested in doing it I suppose :)

Shakespeare is brilliant and you need to appreciate that. BRO. Anyhow, what people mean is that in standard, to get a mark that is equivalent to a mark in advanced you have to put in much more effort. Hence it isn't worth it.

See scaling is based on candidature and I understand that Std shouldn't have the same alignment/scaling as Adv. But I think kids at the top of Std cohort are inherently disadvantaged, who might have picked it because they wanted to focus on other sbs but not love, love English. I can't vouch for the quality of the Std cohort, but it boggles my mind that only 54ish kids a year get a band 6 in it! And only about 5% a band 5...

Oh and Shakespeare is treated differently in snr school. You might like it and if not, you can push through one module of four where you will have to do it. I did Shakespeare in comparison study and it was fine, but I would have loved to do Julius Caesar for conflicting perspectives.

This pretty much sums it up - standard obviously shouldnt scale/align like advanced, but it gives top end students a grossly unfair disadvantage.

The standards set for a Band 5 and 6 in Standard is A LOT higher than Advanced, I don't understand why the difference is so large but it definitely plays a role in why there's so few at the top.

I love this so much. Hahaha, I'm such a nerd :p
Um like other people say, it's about scaling.
Also I was once told that a section of the exam is marked the same as the advanced. So you'll be competing against advanced students... It's better to give advanced a go so you'll have a better chance.
