Am just finishing off my notes and what not now for this last topic, so I haven't done any past years for the surfactants section.

For people who are already doing questions for the option topic: are you expected to know an example for each type of surfactant.

IMO it is a bit unreasonable to have to remember the name of some of these

eg: cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide

let alone the chemical formula.

Some guidance would be great, just don't want to build this last part of my notes on useless stuff.

I wouldn't say it's useless stuff but if you can remember some of those names it would work to your benefit in that it would just enhance your answer in the HSC and set you apart from the rest. But the core component is you know how these sulfactants work and the difference between anionic and cationic as they are more likely to ask you about their applications i.e. how it works in detergents etc.

Remember the chemical formula and you should be able to derive the name in the exam.

Erm wth, I don't think you actually have to know the name of an actual detergent
You just need to know their basic structures ie. anionic = /\/\/\/\/\/\/BENZENERING\sulfonate
and remember their uses and properties too.
I've finished the HSC papers from 2004-2011 and no they've never asked for us to name a specific one.
