Hey there guys! I'm kinda new to this website, so please help me out a little. :) I'm in Year 10 now and I'm really enthusiastic about getting into a selective school. Right now I'm at a school I don't really like and I feel year 10 is my last chance to get away from it. Here are my schools according to preference:
1) Girraween High School
2) Hurlstone Agricultural High School
3) Fort Street High School
4) Penrith High School
For my Yearly Year Nine report I almost got straight a's... 2 c's tho. I'm a bit sad about that. I'm doing really well in Year 10 though, and I moved up Maths classes. Oh in year nine I got four awards in our assembly, if that helps. I have a bit of extra-curricular activites, like charity work and sports. I also participated in several science contests winning credit for some. I'm also a library monitor. What do you think are my chances? Please be really honest. Oh, and if you have tips for the exam, please leave it bellow.Share any experiences about your Year 11 entry, too. (I might feel inspired!) Oh and if you're trying for Girraween, see you there!

For Hurlstone apparently they have compulsory Ag for Yr 11 entrants, so keep that in mind. Girraween I've heard that if you do well in their test, you're in, they don't care much about extracurrics (source: Kazemagic). Dunno much about Fort St, but it's a test and reports, so just try hard in your Half Yearlies and do well in the test for an offer :).

Oh thank you for replying! I appreciate the advice. How many people do you think apply at Girraween? Do you go Girraween? Thanks! ;)

Hello Kurosaki! Thank you for taking the time to reply. For Hurlstone, I really do like science and Ag is practical science, I assume. Oh, and for Girraween, how many people apply? I'm really nervous about it. Do you recommend getting a tutor or having some classes? Thanks! ;)

I'd say ~100 apply for Girra. For Fort Street, as Kuro said it's reports and a test held at their school but there is also an essay you have to submit on a topic they choose when you send your application form. The maths test is actually really long, I don't think anyone finished the whole thing last year when I took it. So make sure you don't spend too much time on one question, because you won't be anywhere near if you do.

Hey there crex! Thank you for answering my question! I'm really nervous about the Girraween test! How many people apply for Girraween? Do you think I should get a tutor or go to special classes? Thanks for the recommendation!

yea but u can assume that 20% of the 100 applicants will go to other schools so the actual total applicants can be limited down to around 80
and since u gotta be the top 20 to make it in, u just need to be in the top 33% of the applicants so it's not as bad as it seems to be

last years giras entry test consisted of 2 writing tasks, comprehension and a math test fyi

Oh, well, at least I feel a bit better. But I thought that there were only 50 applicants... Haha. No matter! Hey did you do the Girraween year 10 entry to year 11 test last year? How was it? Any tips for me? Was it hard? Did you get in? I've always wanted to go Girraween. I was so happy when I saw they accepted for year 11. It was like a call for my dream! :)

yea i did it last year and got in, it wasnt particularly hard, but the maths test for that year was weird cos most of the questions didnt directly relate to maths, sorta like science. for eng writing they gave us 2 pics and told us to write our stories based on them
oh yea and we also had to write an essay about a topic they gave us
so in total 3 writing tasks for that year (not 2) lol
there was also a comprehension test

cant really give u many tips except to just practice ur writing and knowing how to write a structured essay

^ An outdated guide and my 'experience' basically.

I've made various contributions to other 'selective application' threads around here so make sure you browse around for extra tips/pointers.

Good luck!

If you have any specific questions, post them away.

I also am applying for Hurlstone among a few other schools you haven't listed, but I am really doubting myself now. At the beginning of the year i was sure i had a chance to make it into at least one selective school, now Im not so sure. Im constantly doubting myself and questioning myself :S
Do you know how many people apply for Hurlstone and how hard the test is? This is my last chance to get out of this hole that I go to now. I hate my school and im sick of it, i just want to get a good education so I can be happy again :'(
Should I get tutoring? I asked my mum to find a tutor for me in early term 1 but she never did. It's too late for me to get a tutor for my half yearlies cos they are in 2 weeks :/ Im scared ill do bad in my half yearlies and then that will make my report look bad, meaning no schools will accept me.
I dont know whether having to do the test for Hurlstone is a good thing or a bad thing. Do they also consider your reports and extra curriculars at Hurlstone? Or is it based entirely on the exam? Im so nervous!! >,<

Hey GolfGirl 97! I'm really sure Hurlstone's going to be pretty popular, it ia 20th in the whole state. From what Rivalry told me, it's best to try your best with everything... Yes They consider your reports and extra-circular performance. Can tell me what you got last year for Year nine yearly? How's Your extra-curricular? What are your other preferences of schools?

Hey, The other schools I'm applying for are st George girls, Sydney and maybe a partially sective like Tempe. I mostly want to go to St George though. If they dont accept me then I'll either want to go to Sydney or Hurlstone. With Hurlston idk if it is better because there is the test i mean, if i go good in the test then that will be good..idk if they look at ur other things or if it is mainly weighted by the exam... if i get accepted there ill be happy..just dont wanna do the test... i hope i get into st george though!!!1
I got highs and outstandings in my year9 yearly, really worried about my yr 10 half yearly though. I represented my school in golf since yr 7 and went to state carnival and represented my region or area (idk if Sydney south west is a region or the area) last year. I'm doing duke of Ed this year, I'm a peer mentor and also last yr I was a peer numeracy tutor. I think that's about it. I can't remember what else I did. I also get awards on presentation day. Last year I came first in elective history and geography but every other year I came first in science. Omg that reminds me! I also did ICAS last year and I'm doing it this year and I also did the national geography competition this year. Is that enough?? I'm scared my report will let me down or my extra curriculars are crap.
The reason I'm so worried is because I applied last year but didn't make it :'( kind of beginning to doubt myself this year...

Don't give up! Just because you didn't make it last year, doesn't mean you won't make it this year :)

Keep up the extra curricular and academic results and you should be fine¡
