In my story my characters are travelers in the medieval ages, and I want to refer to the places they are going to as they were called back at the time, in order to clarify where these places are can I put a footnote at the bottom saying where the place is in a modern day context?

i.e. The characters are travelling in the region of Almoravid1

(1) : Modern day Morocco in 1100

Unless you know your marker is David Foster Wallace back from the dead, I'd avoid it.

Kind of related, but I used footnotes in my essays to cover slang from quotations (in one of my quotes, a character used the term "bus" which is NY slang for an ambulance, I footnoted that).

Not sure if this was correct though.

To think of it another way, is the footnote really important? If it is, it shouldn't be a footnote. If it isn't, it shouldn't be in the story.
