Re: Students taking easy subject options says SCEGGS Darlinghurst principal Jenny All

You're saying its as easy if we say something liek 4 unit maths compared to Senior Science for example? We both know you're wrong.

Ive got nothing against students who play the system, pick the easy subjects and get ATARs so much higher than they deserve. Im a lot more against the system that allows them to do this
If I did both Senior Science and 4unit maths, I'd have to spend more time on Senior Science to get the same raw as I would in maths tbh.

And it's only 40 raw too, it's easy to get for some one who is smart.

About 3 weeks ago I met a Sydney Uni Electrical Engineering student who has not done physics at school. I assumed he must have taken a bridging course in physics. Nope, he told me. I was gobsmacked. Sydney U, allowing a student to do Electrical Engg, without requiring him to do physics! He finds the course hard, though.
High school physics isn't exactly the best type of preparation for uni physics, mechanics from MX2 seems to be more relevant.

Not true. You haven't done first year physics so I'd say you shouldn't assume. Mx2 mechanics is good for about 2 weeks of first semester mechanics at USYD. The rest of the semester is largely new material that you wouldn't have done ( thermal physics and waves and oscillations.) Second semester draws in ideas from Hsc physics a lot more. Electromagnetism is drawn on and concepts from high school are extended with much more mathematics. Then there's fluids which is new. Finally quantum physics which draws from from ideas to implementation and quanta to quarks heavily. Hsc physics gives a good background for this.

Please do some research before being partial about the supposed godliness of mx2.

So I don't necessarily have to do physics is order to do engineering. I mean I have 2 unit maths and chemistry to do chemical engineering right?

Jeez calm down.

That's just what every single person I've asked who has done first year physics has told me. Guess you're the exception.

Umm I don't exactly know who you've been talking to..

You've realised nothing ;)

I won't bother showing you what you're in for. I'll just let you find out yourself next year if you do take physics. :)
I am taking 1901 :p

Looking forward to the pass.

Whatever the inadequacies of the NSW HSC Physics, it is still an important background knowledge to have for Engineering.

In my possibly outdated view, physics is an essential foundational subject for engineering (apart from financial engineering), including Chemical Engineering. But Engineering Studies, useful in its own right, is not a gateway to Engineering! A year 10 student, with little knowledge of university courses may, innocently be misled into thinking it is.

Uni's should usually have a intro physics requirement regardless or not someone has taken physics in high school... It's good to get people to freshen up. You'd be surprised how many people who took econ for HSC flunked first year economics at UNSW lol.

he is probably a very small minority though

also with regards to you chemistry in medicine comment, i guess chemistry could help but the chem you require for med is rly minimal and they go through it anyway. I would say biology is much more important, but again, they go through all the stuff u need to know again so doing the hsc sciences can help i guess but is by no means necessary.

Universities really should reintroduce prerequisites for various degrees.

no!

education should be approached from a bit of a different angle, make it more interesting and meaningfull for the kids.

no just need to put in fear. everybody knows that having a good education gets you further in life. you know why asian kids do well in school? not because they aspire to be anything more than white kids or brown kids, but because their parents WILL BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF THEM and make them feel retarded and unsuccessful. Fear is a better driver.

from transracial adoption studies, its shown that black kids dont go significantly better in white households than black kids raised by their parents

also culture doesn't just come out of nowhere.

Re: Students taking easy subject options says SCEGGS Darlinghurst principal Jenny All

Back onto the topic of the thread, it doesnt surprise me in the least that students take the easy option. Ultimately, the way the system works, you need to get the best ATAR and you pick subjects on that basis. Many people dont really want to muck around and challenge themselves when it comes to education, they just want to do what they need to get by. Ultimately though, I know my enjoyment and desire to learn drops considerably when I hear words like "syllabus", "exam", "assignment" and "need to do well". Once I hear that, my survival instinct kicks in and I do what I have to to get the job done.

Someone once told me that "If you want to get an education, go to school. If you want to learn something, go to a library and get a book". For me personally, if I really want to learn something and challenge myself I'll do it on my own, I dont really feel as if school or uni was the right place for it. I'm not saying that you cant enjoy learning at school/uni, but for me personally, I never really felt that way about it.

why are african immigrants the top scoring in the US for university degrees per capita then?

Re: Students taking easy subject options says SCEGGS Darlinghurst principal Jenny All

because its easier for rich, smart and/or educated africans to immigrate to America in the first place, and for those who dont already have degrees its ridiculously easy for them to get into university and receive financial support (because muh diversity), and if things for african-americans are anything to go by, they're probably subject to affirmative grading and graduation too

i.e. theres massive preselection at play here

i mean think about it, many native born US students tend to be under significant financial strain while at college and find their student debts difficult to service

you think some broke-ass kids off the streets of somalia are just applying to universities the usual way, and also taking out sizable student loans? nope lol

Edit: Sub-saharan african immigrant IQ is estimated at around 89 (cf. 100 for white Americans, 106 NE-asians), so the likely explanation is most of them get degrees in africa, which is dead easy, and then jumping to the front of the immigration queue due to having that degree

source for the bolded part?

also we already had this discussion about IQ in another thread, "IQ and the Wealth of Nations" (i think that is the source you were referring to) has been criticised by a lot of people for shonky methods for getting it's results, not to mention there is the more obvious psychometric problem of giving western-oriented IQ tests to non-western people
