Before I get to the main focus of this post, I will introduce myself:
Graduated from Liverpool Boys High School with an ATAR in the mid-80's. (Not a very sound school academically; ranked 646/660 this year).
I came 1st in Biology, 1st in IT VET, 1st in IPT, 4th in Chemistry and 5th in Advanced English. Also did mathematics as my 6th unit of study, but was terrible at it and would use its period to study for other subjects.
Last year was my first year of university, and I did a combined Bachelor of Business and Information Technology at UTS.
My dream had always been to study medicine/dentistry and become a brilliant health professional serving the community. But after numerous attempts at it I didn't get in, and I don't know if I ever will (so discouraging -.-) The reason why I chose to study Business/IT is because I wanted a backup; something that I could fall back onto if things didn't work out! Mind you, I ardently desire med/dent, but coming from a middle class family where I am the only one to have gone to university meant a lot, and hence I had to do something more reliable than a Bachelor of Science/Medical Science which is more relevant to Medicine. Now the thing is that I also applied for USYD combined law - Bachelor of Commerce Bachelor of Laws to be precise. I achieved a GPA of 6.4 in my first year of university, and received an offer for it in the main round.
I don't have a law background as I never really pursued legal studies in high school, though doing fundamentals of business law as part of UTS Business instigated a growing interest for law in me. My speech isn't perfect and probably just average, and my written communication is probably alright! I'm a hard working student, and hearing the notion of reading a lot for law doesn't scare me! I just want to know the difficulty of it! Is it really as hard as people put it to be, and specifically at USYD? Is the competitive nature of students intense, and do you think a persistent individual like me would survive? I never studied business at high school, but did reasonably well in it at tertiary level, and somewhat liked it more than IT (something that I've being doing since year 7). I'm of a perfectionist nature and will put in all the effort required into something, even if I hate it. I always aim for the best possible outcome. After graduation, I want to work at one of the big organisations - e.g IBM, E&Y, PwC, KPMG and RBA. Having been to quite a few of meet and greet sessions at E&Y hosted by UTS students, and having spoken to a few of the employees there; I've noticed that most of the employees there studied a combined Law/Commerce degree. Well, all of the 7 candidates that I spoke to from different faculties (IT risk, advisory etc) did law/commerce at either USYD, UNSW or UTS. At the moment, I'm really not interested in Law! But this may change after I try it! Maybe I'll like it! I wouldn't mind becoming a solicitor though or doing something in immigration law!
So here's the thing; do you think I'm capable of doing Law based on what I've denoted. Or would I be better off staying at UTS and getting more HDs?
Coming from a non-English background, I know that some bits of law will be challenging for me. But I really don't know what I'm getting myself into! Maybe it'll be rewarding, or perhaps hell! Based on what I've told you, do you think I have the drive to excel in such an intense course? My parents don't have a tertiary qualification, and I'm definitely not one of those random no-life Indians/Asians. They never really invested in my education and I never did tuition. I also want to hear about some of the challenges that I may face in my first year of study. Some people dream about getting an offer to study law at USYD and they work so hard; I feel as if I don't deserve it as it's something that I never actually worked towards and I didn't anticipate it. I could always drop down to a regular commerce if I find the law part too difficult.
Please advise, I think I'm going insane with all this thinking. I just need some reassurance from someone who has/or is doing law.
Thanks heaps :)

I'm not so sure bro. I think I'll go to USYD. UTS is a great uni, and I'm so proud of it :)
I would have defs stayed at UTS if it was between USYD Commerce/IT and UTS Business/IT!
We'll hangout sometime after you're back lol
I just don't know if I will survive!!!

I agree.

Despite having not studied law I think as long as you've got the motivation to work hard, you can excel in any course. Besides, look at what you've achieved already. Great job!

Thanks :)
Hopefully I'll be able to sustain my achievements! I don't want my GPA to drop below a credit average nor fail and drop out of law :/

Go for it!

You've already defied the whole livo boys standards and achieved a really good GPA. If you've gotten the offer and you're willing to put in the hard work just take the opportunity.

I back you up cos I went to school next door - livo girls :)

Cool!
91.90 is an impressive ATAR for someone who went to a school in that area.
Also, congrats on your offer :)
LGHS actually got some pretty good results this year. We had a few girls get the 90s. I think our highest was 99.1, which for the area is pretty damn good. HAHHAHA. I'm pretty sure she got a scholarship for UNSW.

Go for it. When do these kind of opportunities arise? Only once, and with 2 hands, you should grab them. Anyways, Comm/Law doesn't deserve respect but generates it.

i dont do law, but i think you seem driven. not 100% sure about your capabilities in regards to law, but a 6.5 or whatever is great at any uni in any course.

go for it mate, jealous of you a bit haha. i might try transfer from comm/science to law in a year but it seems hard (and im lazy) and probably doesnt play to my strengths (more mathsy analytical).

good luck

Hey there.

I was set on goal to do electrical engineering.

Then I realised I had enough bonus points to do electrical engineering and combined law at UNSW.

However, I knew that I did not want to do law, even though some of my relos told me to do it.

I chose pure engineering as that was my passion.

It seems to me that your passion lies in medicine as your most preferred future, then law.

You said that you did not make it into medicine and dentistry. Although do you want to do it more than law?

If you want to do law and have a genuine interest in it, then do it!

Although keep pursuing medicine if you feel you want it more than Law.

Its up to you in the end, but follow where you feel you have interest and a future in.

I'm in my final year of law now... I keep a revolver in my desk draw in my room and play Russian Roulette every day because of it... :haha:

on a serious note, don't be daunted by law... the high ATAR is due to the high demand and not because you need to be smart (makes you looks smart around the family and your friends)... I honestly think a person can do really well in law with an ATAR of 75, maybe even less... just got to put in the hard yards that's all...

I went to a shit high school in Victoria (I'm talking really, really shit... so shit the average ATAR was 34; out of 175 year 12's only 25 actually graduated)... lets just say my ATAR was fairly ordinary (I was a little bit of a hood rat in high school)... I took the back roads into law (in other words, I grew the fuck up)... from TAFE, went to uni, finished the first degree and decided the career paths within were pretty crap and went to study law so I can broaden my prospects...

However, simple answer to your question... Do what you want to do... Where there is a will there is a way... If you want to do medicine and dentistry, I'm sure there is some sort of alternative path in... :haha:

Yes, I ardently desire medicine and it's been something that I've been chasing for a while now. I even applied interstate (JCU) and didn't get in. I don't know if I ever will though! Law somewhat fascinates me, but I don't think I have a genuine interest in it as I do for medicine. I will still apply for medicine this year, even if I'm doing law/commerce. I just hope that my GPA is reasonable and sufficient for a transfer after first year of Com/Law!

Tried it all man, did the UMAT twice and didn't get the results anticipated. Applied for JCU twice and didn't even get invited for an interview (and I had my application reviewed by a number of people). I really want to do med, but I don't think I'll get in anytime soon! The only pathway left for me to try is postgrad entry, and I think GAMSAT will be difficult for me as I didn't study tertiary level science or HSC physics!

You may not get a higher gpa in law :p. it is more difficult than the previous course.
