Hey, guys I have a conundrum, I really like the idea behind engineering, but yet I still like commerce and economics is my best subject in the HSC... Is bcom/beng the degree for me, I really want to be a successful financial services operative on the other hand, will the combination with engineering aid my professional expertise??

Engineering is the main degree in an Engineering/Commerce combined degree. You will spend more time on Engineering and do less subjects in Commerce than any other single or combined Commerce degrees.

I honestly do not see how spending the time and money on Engineering will be a good investment for a career in financial services. Maybe Commerce/Science with a major in a specific maths specialisation would open more doors for a career in the finance/markets/trading industries.

now that I've properly read what OP said, Why do you want to do combined? it does not seem like you want to do engineering after uni so why even do the degree at all?

Not really a specific reason, I just find engineering very fun and interesting...Commerce is something which I am good at on the other hand. So hence my conundrum... I think my big issue is that I am on the fence and I cant really decide which I should so something which interests me or something which I would be good at.

Engineering is good if you're good at maths and want a job in a quantiative role (e.g. economist, risk specialist, trader, etc) where you need to prove your core arithmetic ability and ability to understand complex models is excellent.

But, there are other ways to prove it.

On another note, economics in HSC is very different to economics in uni which is far more driven by numbers/equations/models than qualitative considerations.

On this note, I realised that there was a lot of calculus that could be included in the HSC content, but wasn't for the same reason as to why its not included in HSC Physics.

It was a troll you can't do commerce/med combined at UNSW lol.

There may be some exceptional times where a student in one of their higher years of med, doing really well at med too, ends up deciding to do commerce laterwards, and they might get rid of a few gen eds or something. Though I highly doubt this is a frequent thing lol.

That should be a good enough reason to do the degree. You can drop it if you don't like it after the first year. I was in your position (probably worse, because was also thinking about law or economics) and a major reason that engo/comm appealed to me was because of the maths component. I think you should just try both. Also, you'll be on HECS so money really shouldn't be a factor here (think long term).

A friend of mine started off in comm/science and changed to comm/engo last year (got HDs in both eng units) and loves it. Eng degree also gives you a good back up if you don't get into the top shit finance roles - which seem to be your primary interest.

They do MBAs,it's a good change of career and the combo can be quite deadly(in good demand)
