Thousands of students have enlisted a Sydney company to write essays and assignments for them as well as sit online tests, paying up to $1000 for the service. Their desire to succeed threatens the credibility and international standing of some of our most prestigious institutions.

A Fairfax Media investigation has uncovered a sophisticated online business, which has produced thousands of university assignments and turned over hundreds of thousands of dollars since it began operating in May 2012.

there are legit hundreds of flyers at uni offering these types of services, not just MyMaster. A bit surprising that this article has decided to focus on just one company

My law lecturer pointed out to us last year that she, and many other faculty staff members also purchased copies so they could see which students were cheating. They also have translated copies of flyers and posters to keep an eye out .

No specific company was named, but it certainly isn't just students buying.

I always wondered how some of those international students got their degrees.

I think we've all been in the situation of having to do group work with an international student. On most occasions the work they produce is utter crap, yet they somehow manage to pass their units and graduate.

Very suss and universities really need to crack down. Cheating should be quite obvious to a tutor/lecturer when they are marking a very well written essay produced by an ESL international student who can barely string 2 words together in tutes.

But we all know unis dont want to upset the milking of the cash cow.

(a) lecturers don't remember your name in most cases
(b) they mark without names so the mark is allocated for the essay, not for the expected standard of work

I don't recall having an essay blind marked at uni. They'd usually come back covered in the marker's feedback and notations on the pages and my name was always on the cover sheet as well as the essay itself. Would quite often be marked by the tutor and they who would know who you are. Maybe they do things differently these days.

It's all done online now and with student numbers, the lecturers have no way of knowing which essay belongs to which student :)

I think it depends on the uni and subjects. For Law I am marked under this system and for the essay assignments (and come to think of it all hand in assignments so far) in Business it's the same - they require your student numbers and your names. But having said that, often times the markers aren't your tutors and your lecturer will not know you unless you're in their seminar/tutorial class.

Tbh though I'm neither surprised nor upset. If people want to pay thousands for the assignments and exams within their degree that already costs thousands it's not really my concern. As long as the scientists and engineers that actually get employed are legit the world can still go forward.

Business/Commerce is an immaterial degree so there's no real loss to society there :haha:

Isn't commerce easier to get into compared to law, and so more international students would do commerce? That's my reasoning as to why commerce is at the top. Also, no one would pay what international students pay just to do arts, and that's why arts isn't first even though it's easier to get into than commerce.

Those fees though... dayumm

Commerce is top since its the go-to degree for international's trying to get PR. Especially something like accounting. International students will get destroyed in arts/law since they have such huge time struggling to write coherent sentences. Internationals already have a tough time getting IELTs over 6.5, I doubt a person who can barely speak any english would even choose law lol. you need IELTS 8 (fucking hard) to get into law.

Flyers are everywhere at uni's, I know coz i can read chinese those sneaky fucks think they're so smart. Uni's keep passing international students who have obviously not have the aptitude towards many degrees. This is what happens when you cut university budgets and let international students become huge revenue stream. Cheating at post-grad level is insane as well, especially accounting @ macquarie according to a friend.

Cancel their fucking degrees for fraudulent conduct.
