Here's an extensive definition.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) refers to when an organisation seeks to meet or exceed legal and normatively mandated standards, by considering the greater good of the widest possible community within which it exists, both in local and global terms, with regard to the environmental, social, economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic impact of the organisation’s way of conducting business and the activities it undertakes.

A business that engages in legal compliance is not necessarily a business that is a socially responsible corporate citizen.

In basic terms, CSR involves business activities that go beyond legal obligations (more than just complying with laws or regulations).

You can talk about CSR in terms of the triple bottom line model.

Economic performance
Environmental performance
Social performance

The fundamental notion is that CSR places value on financial returns to the business (economic performance) whilst achieving environmental and social sustainability.

For your assignment, you are probably required to draw upon case studies and contemporary examples of businesses that have engaged in CSR.

Can you think of examples of businesses that have engaged in more environmentally sustainable practices?

Can you think of examples of businesses that have shown that they are socially responsible citizens?

Technically, CSR is a dot-point from both the Operations and HR syllabus.

I answered it in terms of Operations, rather than HR, because I thought most schools would cover Operations first.

I assume this belongs in the Operations sub-forum but OP hasn't made it specific.
