Sorry I don't get the part where you say 'though as per the brief'.

Can you please explain?
Brief

noun
1.
BRITISH
a set of instructions given to a person about a job or task.
"his brief is to turn round the county's fortunes"
synonyms: instructions, directions, directives, briefing; information, guidelines, guidance; remit, mandate; informalgen, rundown, low-down

So I've considered the advice I received earlier in this thread:
http://community.boredofstudies.org/505/cars-automobiles/310273/hot-hatches-sub-30k-3.html

And I think that I might shy away from spending that much on a car for the time being, considering priorities (looking to save up for an apartment deposit within the next 3 years).

I still have an interest in a new car though and I'm still open to suggestions.

Obviously, I've decreased the limit to $20k or under and it doesn't have to be a hot hatch. That being said, I still prefer handling over performance, and I'm not interested in an Evo/WRX.

Good choice imo.

I remember seeing a whole bunch of Golf's at government auctions too (on an interesting note there are heaps of government sold RX8's too on the streets from these auctions) so you can get a good look at the market available there too.

Mid 2000's Audi a3 turbo, similar to the Golf. Can just squeeze in a moderate power exemption for p-plates (by 3kw) ~$12-16k
Other than that, can look at cheaper Rx-7's, might be a bit 'hoony' though...

OzKo is on fulls.

It is very hard in this day and age to find an RX7 that is not thrashed and also at a cheap price (unless you are a mechanic and have done your own engine rebuild).

Similarly with RX8s. The cheaper they are, the more you'll have to gauge the condition of the engine before buying it.

One thing to note is that the more of a performance build you go, the more likely you'll need maintenance for it as it starts to age.
