I've been looking at degrees and was wondering if you can double major in commerce with finance and accounting if you do a double degree like commerce/math.
Also is it possible to be an accountant if you don't do an accounting major.
Thanks

Depends on the university. Can't speak for the others but you can definitely do a double major at USYD if you plan your units appropriately.

I doubt that would be possible whilst also doing CA prereqs

so is there no possible way to do accounting/finance along with a math degree, even if I planned it out well?

also I was just reading up and it says that you can still become a charted accountant without an accounting degree as long as you pass the exam(similair to an actuary I guess), is it just a lot harder?

also would a degree in applied mathematics or financial mathematics like at Usyd be similair to a finance major but a lot more indepth/focused on the maths behind it and stuff?

You need to do pre-reqs

I'm not really familiar with CA, but I googled it and it definitely looks like it is possible. They mandate what is equivalent to 84 credit points, and there are 240 needed for the combined degree, so there's plenty of room.

Yes it goes into much more depth with the mathematics involved. I'd say that's enough to really set it apart from the finance major. Still, if you did both applied/financial mathematics and finance they should complement each other well.

Plus you can always do the prereq's for a CA at TAFE apparently

Not sure how valid the source is :/

Lol unfortunately not, has to be a university course, unless the university is teaching at TAFE for campus/location reasons etc..

Yes you can become an Accountant without an accounting major, CA have this new thing called foundations this year where you study all the prerequisites in one year.
Firstly you should know that there is a major influx of accounting major graduates each year - and even if you want to become an accountant you'll have to show some kind of passion or reason as to why they should hire you and pay for your foundations rather then someone already having done his/her accounting major and ready to be qualified - I should add that primarily only big 4 will take non-accounting major holders to be trained if they deem them worth it - smaller tiers and other accounting jobs generally only take in accounting major students (for good reason)

Also depends on the role specifics and whether it's a true accounting role (e.g. audit vs tax vs consulting) - some firms may take non accounting graduates but they'll put you through (aka pay for) a bridging or foundations type course (e.g. Deakin is quite popular for this). I am pretty sure TAFE won't get you there.

That all being said for the Op, you realise you can do more subjects than what the minimum required to attain major/minor status or your degree right? It'll just cost you more money/time. It's not uncommon for people to extend uni by a semester just to do a couple of subjects they need for prereqs, and some employers will even be flexible to help accommodate your study needs.
