BOSTES announcements have concluded. I made notes but don't have time now to type it all up. I'll do it later (other presentations are still hapenning). I also got HEAPS more trial papers and again I don't have time to upload them yet. I'll do it later.

But basically the announcement is twofold.

1. There will be a formula sheet starting next year.

2. Consultation on new syllabus draft writing briefs will commence soon.

Do you think with the formula sheet, alignment of the subjects will go up/down?

Holy fk..That would mean that with the formulas sheets there will not be any easy questions like just Inserting the formula to the question.

I'm actually so jealous... you now get a formula sheet and I still have to do the HSC without one. Doesn't really matter now, but before trials I would have killed for a formula sheet.


EDIT: Wait, just realised what topic this thread is in... is this for all math subjects?

Well that's good, because otherwise they're just testing you on substitution and memorisation of formulae.

Shouldn't make much difference unless maybe the nature of the exams is changed as a result of the introduction of these formula sheets.

Well that's good, because otherwise they're just testing you on substitution and memorisation of formulae.
Then hopefully 2u should align better.

It wouldn't make much difference for 4U though. It will just get rid of those buildup questions for conics, which are like "Show the equation of the tangent/normal is this:"

Why would it get rid of that type of question? That requires derivation.

Im assuming when they say formula sheets, they will include things like:
Tangent of an ellipse: x_1*x/a^2 + y_1*y/b^2 =1

Which tends to be the buildup of some conics questions. So what's the purpose of re-deriving it when it is on the formula sheet.

And that type of question is asked so often that most students who have done several past papers would have properly memorised how to do it already anyway.

Can I confirm that this is a formula sheet for mathematics HSC examinations, all the way up to Extension 2? Also, would it be safe to assume a different formula sheet for examinations of different levels (e.g. different formula sheet for Extension 2 and Extension 1)?

Notes on BOSTES announcement

There were 2 main announcements from BOSTES today at the MANSW conference.

1. There will be a formula sheet in the calculus courses starting with the HSC exams in 2016

2. Consultation will begin soon on new syllabus draft writing briefs

The chief examiner for the HSC calculus courses did not want to call the formula sheet a “formula sheet”. So it will be called a “reference sheet” instead.

Details:

Reference Sheet (M, ME1, ME2)

Purpose:

- designed as memory aid

- provided to make it unnecessary for candidates to memorise a range of formulae from the 2 Unit and ME1 Preliminary and HSC courses

Development Principles:

- formulae from 2 Unit and ME1 Prelim and HSC courses (none from ME2)

- in general, a formula that is a case of, or is readily obtained from another included formula, is not included

- a formula that essentially represents a statement or expression of a fundamental syllabus concept or definition is not included (e.g., the midpoint formula)

- formulae introduced in Stage 5 that are not referred to in the 2 Unit and ME1 Prelim and HSC courses may sometimes be needed in answering an HSC question. Such formulae will be given with the question

- terms within the formulae provided are not defined

- it will be a 4 page booklet - first page is a cover sheet, 2 pages for 2 Unit, 1 page for ME1

- notes on this will be published in the next BOSTES bulletin

- it will start next year (not this year)

- the BOSTES board have not yet decided when the actual reference sheet will be published because they do not want to confuse the 2015 candidature.

Draft Writing Briefs (G1, G2, M, ME1, ME2)

- draft writing briefs have been started to be written

- aiming for syllabus finalisation at end of next year

- consultation period will commence soon including meetings and surveys

- current structure will be preserved except that semesterised courses may commence

- we may have to modify, reorder and supplement the Australian curriculum content

- reduce content in G1 and G2

- G1 may have an optional HSC exam and count towards ATAR

- G1 may have a separate Prelim course
