I know UTS is the best for communications and I was considering studying a combined degree there. My interest would probably be creative writing, however I don't feel prepared to delve straight into writing without studying a more traditional Bachelor of Arts degree and having the ability to study some other subjects rather than specialising too quickly in writing at UTS. I was thinking of studying a bachelor of arts/ law at macquarie uni and when I'm a bit more mature maybe take a masters degree in writing at UTS

I've always loved to write but over the years have lost the habit of writing frequently and my writing is not as creative as it used to be as I have gotten used to writing in a particular way for the HSC exams. However I have always innately hung on to this passion of being a writer and the subjects taught at UTS I feel will provide the best opportunities to develop as a better writer.

I was wondering if anyone had and if so you think it's a good idea to study a Master of Arts in Creative Writing.

If anyone has studied creative writing at UTS please give some feedback and your own opinion as to why you took the degree and how you thought it would help contribute to your career or previous degree.

Thanks

I'm not quite sure. I've always thought it would be interesting to have a career where I could write for a purpose (feature articles, science writing, writing for marketing or business, creative writing e.g. novel, short stories, articles), have the ability to consult/ work with others on projects, or work for an organisation because I also have some interests in history, archaeology, international relations, politics and foreign languages.
I don't necessarily want to be a creative writer as part of my job in the sense of writing stories as part of my job, I would love to publish a novel one day but I don't see this as necessarily being related to my job. However, having an aspect of my career that has a writing element would be of interest to me.

Sorry, I know this sounds vague but with a lot of arts degrees often the jobs aren't clear cut like degrees like pharmacy, medicine, physiotherapy, nursing etc, but as I start uni hopefully I will get to know more about the different jobs that match these interests.

Any ideas, though from your own experience or what you've heard from other graduates with these interests would be great. Thanks

Maybe combine a bachelor of business(Commerce) with a bachelor of arts.

This way you can major in marketing and also major in a language(German/Mandarin/Spanish etc) or in creative writing.
