Okay but how r we going to focus our english syllabus around everyday life?
More emphasis on communication and language for starters as well as how to compose a variety of text types with greater levels of sophistication (rather than excessive focus on writing narratives and essays). Leave the literature stuff to more advanced or extension levels.
But if we make english more applicable to everyday life, then those international students would rekk us (like in every subject)

wtf would you teach in 4U Science? What would it cover? A bit of Physics, a bit of Chemistry, a bit of Biology, a bit of whatever else?

At the HSC level, make sure you offer the main science disciplines: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Make sure you have a decent and solid syllabus for each of those subjects, not like the current Physics syllabus, that appears to have been dumbed down in order to make the more palatable and accessible (I think they were getting concerned with declining uptake of Physics). If you want high standards, you don't compromise on your contents.
4U science could incorporate what would be in 3U physics, 3U chemistry, senior science, earth and environmental science, bio, etc

However there needs to be a focus mainly on purely the science itself rather than the inplications to society and environment and the history of science, etc

Just curios to know but what would they teach in year 12 in Asian countries?

Would they teach statistics like how the BOSTES plans to?

If we all did an international exam, all those countries would be standing there and laughing at all of us and mocking us on how 'bad' out maths system is in Australia. The only thing they'd regard is 4U maths but since not many people do that, they'd still mock us

We actually have an international test every few years that compares us with other countries. I was unfortunate enough to be randomly selected, anyhow, these were the results.

And nobody is mocking us, I have no idea where you got that from. even if they are, so what? The maths in university is no way inferior to Asian countries. Are you suggesting to make 4u compulsory or something? Not everyone wants to do maths, and we should respect that.

Australia ranks very highly on most indicators of national performance including 2nd in HDI which measures life expectancy, education, and income per capita. Our education system might be behind some other countries, but evidence would suggest that Australia is doing very well regardless.

What I'm trying to say here is our curriculum seems easier and less inferior to asian countries and if they saw us, they'd think that maths is pathetically easy and they be like "ha"

I bet even america would wreck us in maths

Although in asian counties (someone correct me if I am wrong) they make physics and chemistry compulsory (two highly regarded difficult sciences) but in Australia you're free to do whatever

I don't think they would overall

Seriously, if a year 10 kid in Vietnam (as carrotsticks said in the original post) can do maths 4U then why can't one do it here? Maybe they don't have the "natural ability" to but if you compare a kid with no natural ability overseas than one here, then who'd be better?

Also a lot of people haven't even learnt their basics properly. I remember in primary school we had to do some counting or multiplication thing with our teacher and for fcks sake she was so slow and I decided to rush through it because I already knew it and she was like "we're going to have to start again and do it slowly" and then I rushed in again and she said exactly the same thing. Pissed me off so much. Even in high school (in year 7-8) when people don't know how to do a simple question, fricken rages the hell out of me, like how can they not find the area of a circle???

TBH I don't feel that the concept of natural ability exists, but rather it's whether or not you've learnt your basics properly and you know how to break down complex concepts in an easy simple manner

How do you find the area of a circle again?

Eyeseeyou can you just open the link i linked and download the results of PISA. You are making claims basing on your own assumptions.
If you're too lazy to open it, this is the maths results

You said viets are maths gods, but look at where they are. You also said US is better, but look at where they are. If you're gonna argue something at least back it up with a source lol

The point I was trying to make is that maybe the issue isnt that serious. I mean, as I said earlier in the thread, I do think Maths needs to be changed, but ultimately, I dont think it will have a significant impact on the nation's performance in key areas.

I agree to some extent, but I think people vary according to natural ability. I tutored Maths for 5 years and I specialised in struggling and below average students (by state standards, not BoS standards). I remember having year 8 students who struggled with percentages and another who could not tell analogue time. True, the students hadn't been well taught and they lacked foundations due to the fact that they werent really focused on school as some others. But I noticed a great difference in ability between some of my students. Some had the potential to do higher level maths, others really were barely capable of General.

I said all asian countries with viets being an example. It's mainly bc from a young age, asian countries have a have emphasis on maths (if you get what I mean) wheras here we don't (look at KOA's comment in the other page and he'll explain that maths in Australia taught from year 2-6 was taught in year 1 overseas)

Also primary school teachers and maths make me laugh (read the other page with my story)

I remember this one year 6 kid (when I was in year 5) told me year 6 maths was hard, I saw the textbook, what a fcking joke. I'm not even kidding

I even heard from friends top tutors think 3U maths is a joke

Yea so? My point still stands, you make wild assumptions without looking at any sources.
yes, primary education here is easy. I don't know what your story is and there's like 16 pages, I'm not sifting through that to find your life story lmao
I really don't think you are entitled to look down on Australian education esp maths, if you think it's such a joke, why do you spam bos with a ton of questions. You really should drop your elitist attitude btw

Enoilgam, for your first paragraph, I think people (kids) need to start learning maths as early as 3 years old and as this progresses, they will have no further difficulty in the future

Could not tell what analogue time was??? He's got serious issues (not even joking). I think those who weren't capable of general haven't learnt their basics properly (like I said originally) but seriously, if you're not capable of general maths, you've got serious issues. How can people even get 50% in a general maths test? I don't get this logic here?

The maths curriculum in Australia is really based on anything that'll be useful in society (i.e. trigonometry, logarithms, calculus, probability, rates and ratio, unitary method, consumer arithmetic, etc) and not so much on what's difficult (like how asian countries base it around that) as opposed to asian countries
