I don't know much about suits but I did have a solid month of being a companion to all my friend's suit fittings and saw various combinations. I don't think a black shirt with a black suit is particularly dumb but I feel like the shirt shouldn't be the same black as the blazer/pants.

But then...what tie would go with it *trying to visualise*

Yeah it is, usually you don't wear black and white if it's an actual formal, because you'll save it for a funeral. I've never worn a black and white suit.

Navy blue is nice. For my semi-formal, just going to blazer, shirt and dress pants, screw the suits
