You also get a "free" one when you graduate. But I'm guessing you need it for job applications?

Doubt you would need an official transcript. A copy of whatever you normally use to view your marks is sufficient.

I've only applied for about 40 grad programs in the last month or so

An unofficial transcript should be fine, I haven't had any issues at any company.

You may possibly need an official one once you've gotten a job, but I haven't come across any than would reject an unofficial copy. They know they cost money.
