Experts in adolescent development are cautiously welcoming a little-known, multimillion-dollar Australian government effort to nip toxic masculinity in the bud.
To end violence against women and children, the federal government aims to reshape young male attitudes toward healthy, respectful relationships as “extremist influencers” like Andrew Tate influence minds.

The initiative, known as the “Healthy Masculinities Project,” is poised to launch next year as a three-year trial, supported by $3.5 million in funding.

This innovative project will tackle the insidious impact of social media messaging targeting young men and boys, with the primary aim of eradicating gender stereotypes perpetuated online and promoting a culture of respect and supportive relationships among peers.

The project will engage the target school-age male audience through face-to-face interactions at sporting clubs, community organisations, and on social media.

Recent research has revealed 25 per cent of teenage boys in Australia look up to social media personalities who propagate harmful gender stereotypes and endorse violence against women.

The government has channelled funding through the First Action Plan Priorities Fund, an $11.9 million fund which is part of the National Plan to End Violence Against Women and Children 2022-32.

Minister for Social Services Amanda Rishworth said there is a need for young men to develop supportive relationships with their male peers and marked the project as a critical first step towards fostering healthy male attitudes.

Ms Rishworth cited the links between harmful forms of masculinity and the perpetration of violence against women.

“Research shows there are strong links between harmful forms of masculinity and the perpetration of violence against women,” she said.

“Educating boys about healthy masculinity and providing them with positive role models are important steps to ending cycles of violence.”

The grant round for this trial will open its doors in early 2024 and will offer an opportunity for organisations equipped with specialist expertise to sign on.

Ms Rishworth emphasised the necessity of addressing violent behaviour at its roots.

Andrew Tate is a controversial kickboxer and reality TV star turned content creator who has amassed billions of views among tens of millions of followers despite being de-platformed by most social media platforms.

He has been known to preach troubling views regarding women, including that rape victims “must bear some responsibility” for their attacks; or that women should be choked by their male partners and stopped from going out.

But Mr Tate, who often flaunts his lavish life, is seen by many young men as an authority on what it is to be successful.

I have mixed opinions on this.
On one hand, I do think it's important for teenage males to learn respect towards women, as it definitely is a problem at the moment. I also agree that social media influencers play a role in creating this problem.
However, I believe alot of these social media influencers, whilst not going about it in the best way, are merely trying to stand up for men's rights and respect, in an increasingly woke world that focuses deeply on women, while men are potentially falling behind.
I think the whole initiative sounds good on paper, but i wonder how this will be taught?

look up to social media personalities who propagate harmful gender stereotypes and endorse violence against women.
This is grossly exaggerated. Social media personalities aren't just flipping on the camera and saying 'Go hit a woman.' These 'harmful gender stereotypes' are really just traditional masculine things. Like going to the gym, working hard, etc. These people just want to blur the line between man and woman and claim they are the same. Men and women both have distinct and fundamental roles in society. By neglecting this fact, many people are devaluing the roles of women and men and this is harmful for society in my opinion.
Let's be real, this is really just a campaign against Andrew Tate.

But Mr Tate, who often flaunts his lavish life, is seen by many young men as an authority on what it is to be successful.
This is the real problem in my opinion. Young men being mindlessly influenced by 'influencers' on social media. The fact that they will believe anything a random bald rich pimp says is the real issue here, not 'toxic masculinity.'

This is just fallacious, no one mindlessly follows these people on social media nor do they believe anything that Andrew Tate says. I can grant you uneducated people falling for disinformation, e.g rise of internet anti-semitism, however, the government would rather waste money and time to dictate what people want to believe and consume online irrespective of the erroneous inferences of the exaggerated correlation that supposed 'toxic masculinity' promoted online is that of which incites violence and encourages oppressive behaviour for men.

Could we please start educating women on this disgusting toxic femininity propagated by female influencers online?

"The Australian government must invest money into educating people about the shape of the earth to prevent people from believing the earth is flat and that there are lizard people who blend in with society because it can incite violence and racism against lizards"

Why treat it differently to any other hateful conspiracy or culture online such as the Jewish conspiracies which may encourage anti-semitism and unlawful violence against Jewish people? It's just absurd that anyone thinks it's justifiable to claim a fallible correlation between these two things and take appropriate action by banishing everything they deem as 'tough, aggressive, and violent.'

This is just an attempt to suggest men should avoid traditional masculinity and rather embrace what they call 'correct' to be inclusive.

Insane as well how when I have a differing opinion that @its_ace21 may not agree with, she instantly assumes I'm the same person behind two accounts just because some of my views align with other people's views. Shocking.

They may not believe everything but they certainly come close. Also, I don't know why you think that since I'm against people following Andrew Tate that I agree with the sentiment being pushed here. I said in my last post 'I think this is a bad idea', it doesn't get much more clear than that. And yes I agree that this is a campaign against traditional masculinity. Just because I don't like Andrew Tate doesn't mean I'm not pro-masculinity lmao. In my opinion Andrew Tate is a weak man since he depends on material wealth to flame his ego. My idea of a traditionally masculine man is a strong family man who works for his nuclear family and raises his children, not some pimp who mucks around on yachts and smokes cigars and complains about the world being so woke when absent fathers like him ARE WHAT CAUSES THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Really stupid,
I swear the guy is irrelevant now tho its just a bunch of insecure teens keep reposting his BS, he was really only popular last year tbh and now since hes been deplatformed and went to jail for a while hes kinda irrelevant

Plus the only people who are gonna listen to him are stupid insecure teenage boys who got rejected by a girl and then blame women etc so I think its a stupid initiative like nobody who watches the guy is gonna hit a woman unless they are already effed up

You don't understand the bigger picture here, I don't care whether you like Andrew Tate or not nor did I even accuse you of such a thing or even care to ask you the question, you can recognise that some of the things he preaches encompass embracing traditional masculinity. The wider problem here is the subjective censorship of what a few people in a dark room look on screens think is 'violent' and should not be watched by young men. How can you not even recognise the issue with this and the inherent bias that is so obvious here?
