Ive been rlly lazy lately n bored, no motivation whatsoever and idk what to do
everyone is always like to me: ‘what r ur goals? Focus on those’ BUT I DONT HAVE GOALS THATS THE THING
is there something i rlly want? No
do i want to be first? It’ll be nice but eh
what if u fail? I probably wont
what if u get rlly bad grades? It’s ok im still in yr 10

SEE??? I HAVE A PROBLEM I DONT HAVE ANYTHING ‘IMPORTANT’ FOR ME TO SET A GOAL FOR
idk what to do or how to solve this problem bc ik it will just get worse n worse as i enter senior yr

ive been told to ‘just start studying’ but every time i do i either get rlly bored mid way or just be like ‘eh ik these’ n move on idk what to do

motivational videos dont work, seeing someone more successful than me doesnt work bc i generally dont care if someone is better than me like eh, the thought that ill probably end up not going uni also doesnt scare me be i can either go to tafe n work from there (even tho my parents r uni doctors i dont see it as embarrassing tbh) to go uni or just go to unis overseas

u can tell me the most motivational thing ever n ill still not care (‘what if u die without accomplishing anything?’ ‘Well ik that i have at least died happy’)
n what annoys me the most is bc i havent always been like this, i came first on roughly every single subject at my old skl for 3 consecutive yrs, in primary i was always top 3 in the entire year group from yr 1 up to yr 6

i think its because i moved skls? But i moved to selective that should motivate me more!

idk i have a serious problem n i need help to fix it bc i refuse to continue living like this (n i tried working on myself but it was hopeless)

To be fair, you don't really have to lock in until senior years, I'd honestly just pursue my out-of-school interests and have fun while I can in yr10 and then actually start hammering down in yr11! But really, the best time to start is always now!

You should probably start thinking about what you want your future job to look like, since that'll give you an idea of the goals you might want to set! Interested in becoming a STEM student? Humanities? What do you want out of your future job? Do you want a lot of money, or just a decent amount? Do you want to interact with others or generally stay away from that? You don't have any important goals because you're not trying to plan for the future yet. Which is fine! I don't have a very good idea of what I want to do in the future either, but it definitely helps with motivation and goal setting. If what you want in the future is something that doesn't require much academic stakes, then that's also fine! That means you don't have to be all that locked in for school if you don't want to be.

Some of us just aren't very ambitious or motivated people in general, which is also okay! As long as you're happy with your station in life, or the station in life that you believe you're headed towards, that's all that matters!

Lack of motivation is something that everyone experiences, people who are motivated all the time are in the minority! If your stagnancy is something that bothers you, you honestly just have to pull your pants up and get over how unmotivated you are and start doing things. If you find that you can lock in better depending on certain conditions, try to recreate them! Like many things in life, you unfortunately just gotta "get over it" at times, and it's especially true if it's related to your mindset/motivation. Good luck though!

Also, being top of the grade in primary school doesn't really mean anything other than that you happened to be naturally ahead of the curve at a single point in time so don't fuss too much over that

As a person who has also struggled with motivation myself, here are some tips:

1. Don't rely on motivation
Nobody is motivated 24/7. Sure after watching a motivational video or two you might be inclined to do a maths past paper, but the reality is, nobody thinks about their purpose in life after every single question they get done. Instead, focus on routine, which brings me to my second point:

2. Stop focusing on the macro
I genuinely fuckin hate ppl who are always like "omg look at the big picture if u don't do well for such and such then you won't be able to affort a mansion in the future" - like realistically, we're literally unable to see that far ahead and anybody that says so is pretentious. Especially being in yr 10 with no idea of what you want in life. Instead, focus on the micro. Set small, achievable, objective goals with tangible rewards. For example, when I finish this past paper I can allow myself to watch an episode of the Talk Tuah podcast. That way, you have something to actually look forward to instead of expecting a reward 10+ years into the future.

3. Stop comparing yourself to others
Idk if this applies to everybody, but personally, I feel like when I compare my study routines to others, I end up ditching them. Like I'll do an hour of study or so and then watch an hour of my favourite show, whereas others say that they study 8 hours straight. It makes me feel like what i am doing is insignificant, and as a result, i end up ditching everything. Some ppl say that comparing yourself to others that are more successful makes you more motivated, but as per point 1, this is simple unsustainable in the long term. Instead, focus on what YOU personally want to achieve, and I'm not even talking career / aspiration wise, but rather, something like "i want to finish this module of chem by the end of next week." This allows you to feel a sense of intrinsic and personal accomplishment, and by the end of this, you KNOW yourself that you have made progress, rather than comparing yourself with others and being uncertain of what you are doing is actually meaningful compared to what others are doing.

4. Embrace the "i hate this but imma still pull through" mindset
I feel like despite what everybody says about liking a subject and having such and such passion, in the end if you wanna study and know content properly, this is all utter bs. For many subjects, the HSC syllabus is designed in such a way that it doesn't really apply to real life that much so it's natural not to enjoy studying. Sure, if you actually enjoy what you are doing, by all means enjoy, but I'm saying that it's natural to feel that what you are doing is the most boring thing in the world. But even if you genuinely hate it, you should still be studying, at least for a bit at a time. This brings me to my next point, which is:

5. DO NOT conflate studying and rest
This is pretty self explanatory. Rest is rest. Play is play. Don't mix the two, to avoid burnout. You shouldn't be thinking about studying in your free time. Doing so is simply stressful and unproductive.

6. Finally, stay consistent
IK this is pretty generic and universal advice, but stay consistent. I know personally, I couldn't stick to a certain strict goal, so I created an acceptable "range" that I had to abide by (e.g. at least X papers per day) so that even on my worst days I was getting something done. Take regular breaks, but dont take them for too long, and while you take these breaks, don't think about studying.

Of course all of the advice above is to be taken with a grain of salt and might be completely false, but I hope this helps :)

find a hobby that allows you to make something so you can have something to work on, or go and learn year 11/12 stuff early if you really want to get ahead for whatever, it'll be more interesting than year 10 stuff for sure and you'll probably be motivated to study for it as a result

Ok i wanna thank everyone who gave me tips, rlly useful ill try to intertwine them in my life

for the rest that r telling me to enjoy my life since im in yr 10, my yearly exams r in week 3 n if i fail or get a C i wont be allowed to do my subjects next yr (say i get a high C in english, my deputy will ‘force’ me to standard even if the whole yr ive been doing at a high B low A level - no negotiation) so its understandable that im worried

also im not stressed i just generally want to work on myself n study (bold of u guys to assume i stress for my studies - something i hope to work on so then ill start ‘caring’ if ykwim)

anyways i hope this clears somethings up?

if i could go back to year 10, I would make sure you are going to love all of your subject you are going to do, because you will literally be doing them for hours on end. Other than that, if you want serious early entry, sweat in yr 11 where its easier to get a high atar prediction (because nobody was trying in my experience), but remember top unis dont offer early entry. oh yeah your teachers cant *force* you to do anything, keep that in mind for subject selection

other than that, have fun while it lasts

Yk i also thought that u cant be forced but 4 of my classmates wont allowed to do their subjects (due to bad reports/marks) which is quite shocking
a classmate of mine wanted to do maths adv, physics n engineering studies n all of those subjects were rejected so she had to do math standard n two other random subjects (in the deputy’s office ur stressed to choose subjects the deputy thinks ur capable of - as i was told) so yh

im not worried abt my subjects but im worried abt how ill manage to perform in them if i have no motivation bc as i said i just know that my procrastination will just keep getting worse…

you shouldnt be feeling like this in year 10. If you overdo it now it'll be to your detriment in stage 6. Just rest and take it easy.
