I'm just about to go out so will be unable to offer assistance until later tonight however the answer I'm leaning towards at the moment is 34pi/9....

I'm so bad D: Sorry for not being much help! That was by finding both volumes and subtracting. I need to brush up my skills!

OHHH that isn't it I don't think.

I think you find the area between the curves and then integrate to exclude the metal base... lolol. Have to work that out.

Ugh Volumes... hahaha.

You should have to calculate the volume of y=x^2-1 and subtract the inner volume from that. Do you know what the answer is?

Though it is correct to have ln|x|, for a function for example ln(x^2) absolutes are not necessary. Though I think in the HSC they will let it go. It depends on your teacher.

I am sure that we have a thread on that. In the HSC it does not matter, but in Uni it does.
