Oh cool, I live so close to a swimming pool and people freak out when I say I've only been there like 20 times in my entire life And yeah, you need other things not to melt, I'll be keeping up some dancing to give me something outside school. Life in general? Yay it's good, love having my P's. Have a ballet exam soon. School, have been lazy but once I have more free afternoons off dancing, shall buckle down I hope I need to improve on prelim results. How's life and school going?

You're solving for the unknowns 'a' and 'b'. Since (1 + i) is a root, the result must be zero once you sub it in. After subbing it in, you end up with a complex number which = 0.
For the complex number to = 0 + 0i, you must equate the real and unreal terms to find the values of 'a' and 'b' that satisfy it.
