I think tou have to be more specific with the first option. What type of influences are you looking out for? Sexuality? Beliefs? Worldview? You have to keep narrowinf down your focus area so it is easier for you to write in fine detail on the topic rather than just discussing the topic broadly...

Just adding to that, you also have be aware of their privacy. Try to approach the issue, with the people, in a formal way because it is quite sensitive.
