Ah, a friend just helped me. Substitute x= - 2 so (x+2)Qx = 0 which gives: -8 - 8 + a = 3 a = 19

I had Qx = (x^2 - 4x + 8) to cancel out the -8x, so then a = 16 + 3 = 19 but I think it's wrong...

Suppose x^3– 2x^2 + a ≡ (x + 2)Q(x) + 3 where Q(x) is a polynomial. Find the value of a. I REALLY should know this, but I have no idea. Can someone explain how to derive an answer?

Heh... loan repayments and probability are my favorites, I hate things that don't really make sense, like the equations for SHM and some of the switching between a, v and x.
