Volume question - Method of slices

but they will specify the method you have to use. of course shells is easier and the integration is ususally nicer but if they ask to do it by slicing in the hsc, you have to do it by slicing. sorry :)

    volumes help!

got a Q from patel. the base of a solid is x^2 + y^2 = 8x and every plane section perpendicular to the x-axis is a rectangle whose height is one third of the distance of the plane of the section from the origin. Show that the volume of the solid is 64pi/3.

    definite integrals

    had another quick query, pi/6 ∫ln(tanx + Sqrt(3)) dx 0 i think u use f(x) = f(a-x) to do it but i neek working pls.

    definite integrals

some one must have seen this integral b4. pi/4 ∫ e^x/(1+e^x)cos^2x dx -pi/4

    reduction formula

i was told on the full Q to use sum to products! really hard that way.

    reduction formula

evaluate integral from 0 to pi/2) of cos4x-cos10x)/sinx dx

    integrate this

Re: integrate this slut just do this split the integral into 2 parts to get 1- 1/Sqrt(x^2-1) and then u use standard integral 1/Sqrt(x^2+1) = ln (x+Sqrt(x^2+1)) that's it

    Dot point summaries:

nearly every science dot point wouldve been asked in the last 6-7 yrs so (usually long response); so grab a copy of hsc success one and go through relevant Qs. help if you don;t know whatto include in an answer or dotpoint. otherwise check out hsc online.

    identifying ions

got a Q from the CCHSC booklet A solution was thought to contain either lead nitrate or calcium nitrate. Samples of the solution gave white precipitates with dilute HCl, H2SO4 and NaOH. Which of these ions is present? Explain.

    Conics pronlem

thes kind of Qs are not actually part of the hsc syllabus - its like asking what is the locus of point A if the tangents at P and Q subtend a right angle at A? if u look at patel there is a whole exercise on these non-syllabus Qs which are very good.. but wont be asked in the hsc :(

    integration by substitution

i can get the 1st one out (although my tutor's answer is 1/Sqrt(3) a^2. the second one does something stupid - using t=tanx/2 one limit doesnt exist??? help
  18. jkwii

    integration by substitution

    i dont know what subs to use for 0.5a ∫ dx/(a^2-x^2) 0 and pi ∫ dx/(1-cosx) pi/2 and pi/2 ∫ dx/(4-2cos^2x) 0
