can an object be moving if its upward force balances its downward force

can an object be moving if its upward force balances its downward force? i used to think by common sense this was an automatic no. but i read somewhere that if the forces cancel then acceleration will be zero on the particle but that does not necessarily mean a particle will be stopped, it could...

    Free body diagram question

But can't the scenario be say 400newtons to the left and 100newtons to the rigth so therefore net force is 300 newtons to teh left so it is accelerating toward teh left and thus slowing down? so basically in 4u there won't be any of this type of question? why would they ignore applied force...

    Free body diagram question

    11. A car is coasting to the right and slowing down. The free-body diagram for this situation is shown below: I just have a question. If a car is moving rightward, shouldn't there also be a rightward force in the diagram to balance the frictional force?

Is anyone else struggling with mechanics

I think the problem for me is that i don't do physics and i don't really understand the tension, forces, friction etc involved. e.g. like why does tension act toward a particle, shouldn't it be away (by common sense) and they usually don't teach newton's laws etc tehy just assume you know it...
