I wouldn't be able to afford to go to uni if it weren't for HECS. I'm deferring all of it because I figure I'll be able to better manage my finances WHEN I have finances :p HECS gives everyone the opportunity to go to university, no matter their reason, and I think that is really important.

I'm pretty sure if it says "prerequisite" that's where you absolutely must do the course stated (either at school or through a bridging course of some sort). I think assumed knowledge is just a guide for you. Recommended studies is something similar ;)
