    Official Apology Thread

The policies persisted for decades and were enforced in several jurisdictions, so there were varying reasons for removal. Cultural assimilation was one reason - to train them to join white society and to see Aboriginality as something to be ashamed of. In that vein, some policymakers simply...

You could do geopolitics. No, seriously, don't.

    Parliament Discussion Thread

Bishop walked right into that, though, since her question was "How is the minister going to ensure that her workplace changes maintain penalty rates and leave loadings for working families?" or whatever. I mean, what did she think Gillard was going to say?

    Official Summer Siesta 2007/8 Thread

Damn, now I have to make an actual decision. I was hoping to float in hypothetical-degree-structure-land for a while longer.

    Parliament Discussion Thread

The new speaker is totally awesome. He even has a sense of humour. And in yesterday's question time he said he was considering cracking down on open-ended government questions (stuff like "Is the minister aware of any alternative views?", basically just an excuse to attack the opposition), which...

Gah ... Tax File Number stuff ... advice would be nice ...

If there was a specific cut-off date looming for you to provide your TFN by, they would have sent you about five emails telling you that YOU MUST PROVIDE YOUR TFN RIGHT NOW THIS MINUTE OR ELSE THE WORLD WILL EXPLODE. Just get it to them as soon as you can and you should be OK.

    enrolling in tutorials

In that booklet thing that came with the confirmation of enrolment it says that timetables come out around the 20th, which is a week before o-week (and is also next wednesday). I find it hard to believe that the timetable unit and the student centre could be that efficient, but miracles do happen.

    enrolling in tutorials

When you generate your timetable, you are automatically allocated to tutes. However, you can get the timetable system to reallocate your tutes by nominating a certain day or period during which you don't want any classes. It can take a bit of luck and/or strategy to get it to give you exactly...

    Official Apology Thread

Re: "Stolen Generation" Appology- A different view Nelson's speech barely made sense. "We are sorry for what happened. But it was done with the best intentions and we shouldn't question it. Yay, veterans and pioneers! By the way, rape."

    Paying back HECS

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that you tick the HECS debt box on your TFN Declaration form, because your debt starts accumulating as soon as you start uni. If you're under the HECS repayment threshold, you get that component of the tax taken out of your pay back when do your tax return.

    Who is the Stolen Generation?

Ten members of the stolen generation Basil Sumner, removed from Raukkan, South Australia - family taken to Adelaide where they were split up and sent to different institutions - eventually Basil and his brother ran away and found their mother again, having been so underfed at one institution...

    Who is the Stolen Generation?

I wrote a massive reply to this post, but BOS ate it and I can't be bothered typing it all out again. Rest assured, however, that one of the examples Bolt cites (about Peter Gunner) is fairly dishonest - he glosses over a lot of complexities in the case - and I'm willing to bet that all the...

    Annoying tv personalities

Yes. I love that his career has not moved in about a decade, and he's still presenting weather on an unwatched news program that's not even in primetime. Andrew O'Keefe has to be added to the list, I think. He's the MOST ANNOYING PERSON EVER and yet Seven seems to think they need to put him...

    Timetableing Usyd

Most subjects don't have repeat lectures, so there are no lecture options to switch between. Some compulsory and/or extremely popular subjects (junior accounting, economics, psychology, etc.) have several sets of lectures.

What books + 1st year tips?

First lecture, usually. (You're going to Sydney, yeah? On the Usyd board we have an outline thread where people post up outlines for subjects they've done, so you can have a look at what the units have been like in previous years.)

    Official Summer Siesta 2007/8 Thread

If your pre-enrolment was accepted (you should have got an email confirming this) then you're enrolled for the year and don't need to go into uni at all. Student cards will be mailed out in a few weeks.
