Fiddling with character spacing makes essays look pretty bad. I'd recommend line spacing adjusting and and margin tweaking before resorting to character spacing.

There's more flexibility at MQ in this regard as the uni stresses interdisciplinary learning. You can combine accounting and units in philosophy if you wished. At UNSW you'd get 1 or 2 "gen-ed units" instead of allowing you to pick what you want to study.
