    Where's the middle ground?

The middle ground is obviously somewhere other than BOS. I'm guessing most people below 80 or 90 wouldn't care enough to come here after the exams.

    Clerical Checks?

I wonder if you could ask the Exam Inquiry Centre, or get your principal to lodge an anomalous results inquiry.

    Physics internal scaled down...

No, they do send in actual marks, from which ranks are derived. The gaps between the ranks are critical.

    state rankings below 10th

    2004 IPT - 1860/6846, 2007 Chemistry - 4049/10285, 2007 SDD - 285/1840. Not brilliant, but I wanted to know them out of interest.

    hsc scam?

Given that the presiding officers and all supervisors must be completely free from links to the school they supervise at, there also wouldn't be any incentive for the presiding officer to let that happen. (I got my own supervisor, and I was actually sitting in the main room.)

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

    Well, USyd sucks :p

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

Some schemes give bonuses even for achieving a band 4/5 in Advanced English. They can be rather generous.

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

It's up to each uni to decide their admission standards in accordance with what they feel is appropriate for their program. I don't really see why all unis have to use exactly the same scheme, although I can see value in them cooperating on their decisions in this area and creating summary...

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

No, it's all automatic. When UAC sends your details on to the uni's admissions office, they include all your subject marks so they can do it all without any paperwork.

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

I did mention bonus points schemes several pages back ;)

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

Universities already know what subjects students do, that's how they administer programs like UNSW's HSC Plus. And under your proposed system, they're meant to give more weight to people with different subjects. So as stated, they'll still value the high-scaling subjects like Extension Maths.

    Anyone getting their exam(s) rechecked?

I believe they need to manually retrieve the marking sheets and verify that they were what was finally entered into the computer. English probably costs more due to the two papers, or something like that.

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

All unis use those sorts of things for certain additional selection programs. Actually, it would be good if they created a standardised form even just for medicine and similar courses that normally require those things - would probably save money to have UAC administer it for everyone, and would...

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

Well, beyond whatever academic issues there are, I would be concerned about the administrative load - it would require significant budget increases, and require far more forms. I would prefer a system a bit more like Victoria's, where applicants can provide additional information (Pi Form), but...

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

+1. If most humanities students get lower ATARs, the course cutoffs will change to match that fact. But otherwise, universities would prefer to admit those with the highest overall level of academic achievement, as expressed through the ATAR.

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

I'll agree with you here. Well, I happen to be personally interested in both maths and law, and do acceptably in the relevant HSC subjects, so...

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

    Yeah, that's probably a reason... :/

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

I'm not saying that's an issue, I'm merely pointing out that the American model was not a deliberate decision to decentralise, whereas in Australia we did make a deliberate decision to centralise. So they didn't establish the system specifically to address your concerns. If they did enrol in...

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

Because people find it an interesting topic of discussion - what they like, what they don't like, what value judgments they make about things. It's the same as a lot of discussion topics, there's no real 'reason' why you should talk about them, but they're interesting topics.

Who thinks the HSC is unfair?

Universities in Australia are adopting a mixed ATAR/bonus points approach for almost everything these days, recognising that sometimes the ATAR alone isn't the full picture, but on the whole, they accept the idea that the ATAR is an adequate measure of overall academic performance. And before...
