From what I can see, you should be able to import Word files into Pages through the program itself without need to convert externally as well.
I think schools with religious affiliations have that requirement for three reasons:
1) They want teachers to understand that the decisions made behind the scenes will be somewhat influenced by religious factors. This wouldn't affect teaching, but rather the management of the school...
LinkedIn is a good way of tracking where people are, but isn't too useful beyond that.
You can't network just using LinkedIn but there's value in putting a face to a name, and being able to see a person's past professional experience.
