    New Concept

Great idea. If you could, hit us up with some harder 3U style questions in the MX2 forum. This would be a great way to practise that kind of extended thinking.

    UMAT Prep 2005

I reckon the agoneyes program probably gives you the most bang for you buck but I ended up going for medentry (I got the group discount). I'm curious about your remark that medentry seems a lot easier. I did my first practise exam the other day and got about 237 raw, which is a decent score. I...

Have you been studying a lot this hols?

I did very little study, then I hit 4U hard for a day and a half and finished 1 1/2 topics. Then I did very little. Now I'm staring at work trying to convince myself that I'm being productive but I'm quite terrible at getting things done.

    roots/zero

Yeah, I'll pay that (EDIT: but only just ;)). It was mainly the statement "So, it can be seen that roots can be considered values of x giving P(x) = 0, whereas zeroes are just values." which I kinda objected to. Just be careful with gospel statements when people are unsure of concepts. [as you...

    Parametrics Question

    ii) First, find the equation of the normal: dy/dh = -2ah dx/dh=2a ---> dy/dx = -h therefore gradient of normal = 1/h y +ah<sup>2</sup> = 1/h(x-2ah) x = hy + 2ah + ah<sup>3</sup> and x = qy + 2aq + aq<sup>3</sup> hy + 2ah + ah<sup>3</sup> = qy + 2aq + aq<sup>3</sup> y(h-q) =...

It's a strangely active forum really. I think it's even topping all the other subject forums in terms of post count.

    Brian Greene's "Elegant Universe"

If you were going to order somethign you'd be better off getting the book. It's much better than the series IMO and the series serves better as something for afterwards to help you visualize the concepts.

PHYSICS y have you gotten this way?

I really don't think things are as generalised as that. EDIT: And just something with 11 o'clock irrelevance, how does this exist when there isn't an advanced physics course? http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_sc/pdf_doc/sheep_adv_710_syl.pdf

    roots/zero

That seems to be more a matter of grammar and semantics (and perhaps your personal method of communication/notation) than of mathematics. That kind of 'distinction' just muddies the waters IMO.

What does your inner-child think of the HSC

Mine is hiding in a hole with my spirit. I let them out for a couple of days at the begining of the holidays but now my intellect is pounding them back in. They're not very happy about it.

    Need Help with Locus Qns

Putting her results into graphmatica it does look right :p. If you take a negative value for one of the perp. distance formulas ('cause of the absolute value) you get another line: - 39x - 52y + 65 = 25x + 60y - 5 64x +112y -70 = 0 You can see visually with graphmatica, as with the...

    roots/zero

I'm pretty sure that they're the same thing i.e For the polynomial (x-a)(x-b)=0 It has roots: x=a and x=b It has zeros: x=a and x=b It has factors: x-a and x-b EDIT: http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Root.html (I swear we had a drawn out discussion of this in class dude ;))

I don't really make notes but when I get up the motivation approaching exam time I will jot down some points for any potential weak spots.
