Students Online

Extension students have both a 2-unit and an extension component. For the purposes of the 2-unit component, they're ranked along with all 2-unit students, irrespective of whether those students are also taking the extension component. Many schools hold separate classes for 2-unit and...

    Marks between first and second

The difference is usually negligible. There is no fairer way to determine the moderated assessment mark for students ranked equal-first. Remember that any method must also be applicable to scenarios where three, four or even five students are ranked equal-first.

    Maths Seminar

Details regarding the seminar are available via our main website: www.boredofstudies.org/seminar04.php It's being run by Jeff Geha (maths extraordinaire) - yes, he's the author of the Excel books, and has done a number of other works too (HSC tips, past paper analyses, etc). He's been...

    Marks between first and second

No. When that student's moderated assessment mark (which is the same as that of the other student) is averaged with that student's examination mark (which is higher than that of the other student), the student comes out on top.

    Aligned Mark?

The standards packages contain responses that were awarded marks at the band cut-offs (e.g. borderline band 5/6 and so on). You compare your response to that in the package. If yours is better, your aligned mark would be higher than that band cut-off (e.g. 90); about the same, the mark would be...

    Marks between first and second

Xayma was correct. If two students are ranked equal-first, they will both receive the average of the top two exam marks as their moderated assessment mark. For three students, it's the average of the top three exam marks, and so on.

    Explanation of HSC Marks (Moderating)

The entire moderating process operates to remove the problems you described, kofmaster. They don't exist.

    Raw band cut-offs. (Updated: 15/09/04)

It's not a typo - the paper was difficult, as I recall. You should be able to do the paper yourself and calculate your own (rough) raw mark.

    Parking Ticket!

You'll pretty much need conclusive evidence... it's damn hard to escape from strict liability offences. If you have a photo that clearly indicates that there was no such "no stopping" sign at the scene in question, or a reasonable (and corroborated) alibi for your whereabouts at the time...

    Raw band cut-offs. (Updated: 15/09/04)

Not all students complete the HSC to obtain a UAI. Only ~30% of the HSC candidature goes on to university. The aligned marks, when combined with the appropriate performance band descriptors, indicate what a student knows and can do. They tell you what you've achieved in 'real' terms, without...

    assessment marks

I don't know where this came from... if you're saying that your assessment marks aren't used in UAI calculations, that's not at all right. See this flowchart for clarification. No. Your raw school assessment mark means next to nothing. It...

    Inputting percentiles

Just input aligned marks and look at the percentiles that SAM reports on the right-hand side. Adjust the marks until you get the desired percentiles.

Why has UAI decreased so much?

No - it's actually a raw mark. The Board's judges for each course decide what raw mark should equate to an aligned mark of 90, what raw mark should equate to an aligned mark of 80, and so on. These are the raw band cut-offs. They're for the Board's standards-referenced system of reporting, and...

Board of Studies reveals raw marks! (2001)

I'm sure they could try to find a way out... but I don't really think you need to worry about it. It seems as though they don't mind giving the raw marks of an individual student to that student.

    Marks/misadventure

The Board 'advises' schools not to disclose the final internal assessment marks because it is virtually guaranteed that they will differ significantly to the moderated assessment marks. This can (allegedly) cause confusion for many students. They seem to forget that students can calculate the...

Scaling for standard and advanced english

The scaled mean for the combined Standard/Advanced English candidature would be very close to 25, which would signify that no scaling was necessary. For example, in 2003, I would estimate it at around 25.3. Keep in mind that not everyone takes Standard or Advanced - a very small minority do ESL...

Board of Studies reveals raw marks! (2001)

You should be able to obtain each mark separately so long as you make it clear in your FOI application. Instead of simply asking for your "raw examination mark", find out the official Board names for your individual and group project marks and ask for them as well.

    Raw band cut-offs. (Updated: 15/09/04)

It's not intentional - there just isn't enough data in the public domain to determine them. These cut-offs have been reconstructed from raw marks that were obtained through FOI requests.
