    The Problem with Rote Learning

Rote learning is not learning, it's memorising. You're not getting an education if you're rote learning, so yes, I think you should be disadvantaged. Everyone is capable of capable of critical thinking.

who else is surprised with chem and phys?

Lemme guess... their harsh marking is in regards to the phrasing of answers, not scientific aptitude. They're pretty much training students to prioritise concise delivery, neatly-drawn graphs and memory regurgitation over scientific curiosity and problem solving ability. Ugh.

    UNSW Scientia Scholarship letter

UNSW scientia is 99.9+, USyd is 99.95. So not necessarily :) but i will hope so!

    UNSW Scientia Scholarship letter

Hi, did anyone else get a "Are you a Scientia Scholar" letter in the mail today? Is that a confirmation that we got 99.9+, or is that just a reminder that if we get 99.9+, we will be offered the scholarship? It's worded very vaguely.

    Extension 2 English Mark

Her internal was last, so she should have gotten the last external. This is weird.

who else is surprised with chem and phys?

93 for phys, expected 96+. Very odd. If everyone was equally affected, surely they'll get scaled up in terms of ATAR contribution.

    First in Course List

Notifications were sent out last Friday, so they had time to process it. I think the achievement seems a lot bigger than it really is because we all sat the exams, so we all have the same context, and we have been told time and time again how important the HSC is. Ultimately though, the HSC is...

    HSC 2013 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2013 4U Marathon Hmm so the CSSA q16 was different, but the 'Deduce that' was in there, as the third last part or something.

    HSC 2013 MX2 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2013 4U Marathon Wasn't that part of the CSSA 2012 Q16? Or the final question of a past HSC paper? It looks very familiar.

Why should dancing/VA/music not be subjects? They have written exams and projects just like any other subject. I did music for a long time (including music 2for prelim) and academically it felt the same as all my other subjects.

    Combinatorial geometry question.

That's very clean and elegant. How can I get better at these more abstract proofs? (i.e not the HSC-style "massage expression a into expression b")

    Combinatorial geometry question.

Oh seanie I love you! First upper bound: 9 girls. At least one must die. First lower bound: 8 girls. Obtained by creating 2 squares with 8 girls on the vertices (where both squares are separated by a lot) and placing the remaining 2 girls in the centre of the squares. The 8 vertex-girls...

    2 weeks until results!

Working full time, seeing friends most nights, starting some online courses on Coursera and hopefully jumping into one of UNSW's summer semester courses. I have maybe 1-2 hours of free time a day, and have never been more busy. The HSC is far behind me :)

    Pentagon versus Hexagon.

Pentagons are disgusting. Not even a shape. Absolutely horrifying. Hexagons are quite nice, not as intimidating as octagons. Pentagons just seem fake, as if they're trying to join in with the rest of the polygon crowd but stick out like a sore thumb.

    Informatics Recruitment!

Gigacube what year did you go? I went at the beginning of this year, it was pretty fun. Too many people though, they should be more selective. For those who are interested, here's a rundown of the high school programming/informatics scene. - The AIC is a 1 hour 15 question pen and...
