    ANU Roll Call 2013

:*( It looked super interesting but I didn't even apply for it because I didn't think I'd make the ATAR (I was completely clueless). Turns out I was well above the cut-off. Sigh. Going to miss that peaceful atmosphere. Now I'm going to devolve into one of those guys that trolls ANU forums by...

    Can't create a timetable

http://mahler.cse.unsw.edu.au/rectangles/ Rectangles OP. It only sorts through 1000 possibilities, so it's not necessarily optimal, but it's a fast and easy method of finding a timetable.

Anyone got into the UNSW TSP for Science/ Advanced Science?

Yeah, if your marks are good enough. TBH though I've heard a couple of current/former students say that the TSP is somewhat gimmicky, at least compared to USyd's TSP program, which actually has projects and courses and whatnot.

Your best bet is probably to get concession weekly MyMultis (zone depends on your transport arrangements), and then maybe keep a TravelTen on you just in case you lose your...

    UNSW Roll Call 2013

1st year B. Science (Advanced), going to major in Maths (focusing on pure) and Physics (focusing on theoretical). I think that Maths/Phys double major was previously disallowed in Adv. Sc., but they've opened it up this year according to a few staff members. ... Then I'm going to USyd to study...

    A few questions on timetables/subjects

Hey, I was over at the advising day for science and talked to the associate dean, he said that for this year he would try to include an optional maths "module" in SCIF1131 similar to the SCIF1121 discipline-specific modules. If maths is your thing that might close the gap a bit.

    Amen to that.

    Merit and Entry Scholarship Email

Sad. And I thought I had a good chance with an ATAR estimate of ~99. Although now that I mention it, I didn't actually bother to say anything about that on my application.

    Q16

Great, thanks. I actually didn't get iii) or iv) in the test - the ideas were all there but I couldn't put them together coherently enough. Everything always seems to crystallise after the test is over, when your mind isn't racing. Also, Pure Mathematics PhD @ ANU. So. Jealous.

    Q16

Anyone get 16)c)iii)? For 16)c)iv): P(k) is greatest when k is the largest integer that satisfies P(k)>P(k-1) i.e. the largest k for which k^2-k-n<0. If k^2-k-n<0, then the postulate for part (iii) is correct is true and thus, sqrt(n) > k - (1/2). Now we want the largest k for which k <...

A discussion for the Average BoS user ~ How are you going with your Study/HSC/etc

I study maybe 1 hour a week + some tutoring, but when exams are <5 days away I'll switch into 2-4 hours a day. ATAR aim 99.2.

Did the first exam feel a little surreal to anyone?

Weird, I never felt the HSC hype in the first place. I always thought that everyone else was just freaking out for no reason.

Take UNSW Computing 1 with Richard Buckland online for free, starting soon!

Hah, I was at Richard's lecture at UNSW. He seemed really passionate. My favourite lecture out of all the Open Days I went to. That said, I already program, so I'll have to decline this one. Also, October 15 is the start of the HSC. Smart.

    double vs single degree?

I did use Google. There are no results on the first page regarding this definition. The fastest way I can find anything about it is through a google search, into Wikipedia's "Monotonic function", into disambiguations, into 10 different possibilities, and only then into an article that doesn't...

    Philosophy/Arts at MQ

Can anyone tell me about the quality of the courses and teaching at Macquarie, especially for philosophy? Is it worth considering, or is USyd a more solid choice when it comes to philosophy and arts in general?

    Physics/Maths/Science at MQ

Can anyone tell me about the quality of the courses and teaching at Macquarie, especially for maths/physics? It's not really what the university is known for, but then again, I'm not so narrowminded as to discount it purely based on reputation. Is it worth considering, or is USyd/UNSW a much...
