I don't really know how you want it to be proven.. but I'll just do something trivial:

By definition the square root of a positive real number gives 2 real identical numbers (of opposite magnitudes). I.e there exists 2 real numbers x = a, such that x² = 2 (and x² = 2, where x = -a). Now 2 is a positive real number, hence it's square roots are real and they exist.

u know 1/2 exist, cuz u can divide 1 into two , end up in 2 things which if u put together u get 1...

but how do u know sqrt2 exist?! =p

Would this involve using the graph y=x² and showing that it's continuous at y=2?

That's almost exactly the same as what i proposed, prove that a square of area 2 exists hence prove sqrt(2) exists, except I was using a graphical representation of the areas of squares...

ok here's a hint 2/4 = 1/2... so if u can draw 4 RIGHT angled triangles, each area 1/2 unit, u are there... =D

Xiao if we're talking proving pythagoras I did that a few posts back, minus the boring congruency proofs, which can be done fairly easily. Then just sub in a=1, b=1, and bingo we have c^2=2 hence sqrt(2)=c
