13 Units Into Year 12?? (1 Viewer)

Hi. I am currently very conflicted in whether I should carry 13 units into Year 12 or drop down to 11 units. The reason i wanted to take 13 units is so Maths eventually wouldn't count towards my ATAR. The reason for this being in all my other subjects i am constantly scoring over 85% in nearly all assessments, yet in Maths i am scoring between 50-65%. (Dropping Maths is not an option)

I am hoping to go study Commerce or Economics and the subjects i am currently studying now include:

- Advanced English
- Mathematics
- Economics
- Business Studies
- Modern History
- Geography
- Studies Of Religion (1 unit)

I really want to take all these subjects and I am trying to push for a UAI over 90, however i have been told on many occasions that I will struggle to maintain good marks with 13 units. So if i were to drop, I would drop Geography, but i wanted to know if 13 units is manageable, and the teachers are just full of it?
Thanks in advance

I'm on the same boat as you and I'm not sure either.

But it all comes down to you. Could you put in the effort and overload your studies every night after school? But then again, the extra units serve as a 'back up'.

As for me, I'll probably drop my worse 2U subject so I can focus on a narrower set of subjects.

why is dropping maths not an option? if you suck at it, don't do it.

if you "need" it to get into uni - do a bridging course. don't sacrifice valuable HSC study time (and maths takes up a hell of a lot of time from what i hear) that could be spent on other subjects.

i was doing 13 units until around ahlf way through year 12 and it wasn't too bad but once i dropped a 2 unit subject i found that it was much easier to focus on the other subjects. i don't think i would have been able to go through trials and everything with 13 units...too much content.

I would drop that but i feel i should do it. even though i suck at it. most jobs would want to see maths on ur hsc...
not true. if you enter a field that has absolutely nothing to do with maths like law or journalism or whatever, i highly doubt you will be disadvantaged in any way by not doing maths.

Just pressure from parents to keep it. The thing is i thoroughly enjoy all my subjects, but i don't want to put myself at a disadvantage by keeping 13 units.
ah, that sucks, i'd suggest just having a good talk to your parents, unless you're like some people i know and have some crazy azn/indian parents. after all it is your HSC at stake.

I'm almost finished year 12 :)S) and I have done 13 units since term 4 last year. (although it was discouraged by my teachers :p)

I'm coping very well and as long as you work hard I think 13 units is manageable.
I'm still number one in every course i'm doing except English (top 10 though) and it's not like I've had no social life this year. I do work really hard.

At my school there are probably 5 or 6 girls sitting on 13 units.

At least give it a go, you can always drop a subject if it gets too much.

Good luck!

I'm telling you now, unless its a very specialised industry, most employer's don't give two shits about your subjects or performance in them.

Whats wrong with keeping everything and seeing how that goes, as has been suggested in previous posts. Only you can judge for yourself how much work you can handle.

i did 13 in yr 11 and that was fine. dropped 2 and picked up ext music (total 12) and i dont have a problem with that. if you work hard you should be ok if you are doing 13 now. keep working hard and you'll be fine. maybe if maths wont count work harder on the others?
