Hey guys!

Now that I have lured you into my little thread I have complete control over your minds! *cough* Okay, sorry for that bout of randomness, what I actually wanted to discuss was who is going to mac in 2006 and what courses you guys are interested in...

Personally, I'm interested in combining law and commerce at mac but it still requires some more thought. I've heard a few little stories about mac and i think it'll be interesting next year to see if any of the rumours are true. My favourite so far is this 'conception day' rumour, i hope it's true!

Mac is also the closest uni to my house so it's nice and convenient. They're building a new train line near mac so that'll help out the students that live farther away...

Welcome to the club!

Conception day has been a bit newtered, but not to worry.

The uni's really close to my house, too, which was a big reason for me going there -- it makes a huge difference.

Apparently the train line will be finished the year just after I graduate.

Mac is awesomeness though. The fact that I can drive there put it right at the top of my list - I'm so over train rides! And besides - if you can drive, you can nap in your car in between classes!

going for commerce then transfering to actuarial studies...the only reason im going there is because of its actuarial program ( i live at bankstown!)


BTW when is the train line going to be completed ???

I tried that, but my preferance for something soft to put my head on often lead to either Bag-Face, Jacket-face or something else equally dire (as in, texture of "pillow" would be imprinted on face. Not a good look). On top of all of that, I got sick of all the weird looks people give you, eg - "I want to study! Either wake up and do something productive, or give me the frickin' desk!"

And besides - when you're in a car, you can stretch out! I even keep a cushion and a blanket in my car these days for Uni napping purposes...ahhh the bludginess

dawma: Estimated completion date is 2008. But knowing cityrail, it might be a fair bit after that. But just like UAI year-to-year scaling, you never know how much longer it's going to take until they finally give it to you...

Macquarie seems really fun and grassy and none of my friends go there which is kool .. every1 of my friends are scattered, UWS, UTS , USYD, UNSW and UOW ... ill hopefully be at MACQ ..

rat boi, if you dont make the cut off you can transfer if its what you really want to do... i know bba has a transfer cut off of like 2.5 which is 2 credits and 2 passes during the first sem which is pretty achievable

Well as you probably already know I'm pretty sure that my Certificate of Languages application with MQ will go through, plus around half of my preferences are at MQ - Arts, Media and Arts(Psychology) among them, so peoples will likey be seeing me around the place no matter what happens lol. *waves* Go Club Mac and its duckies!

I've been wondering, what is Macq Media in Writing like? I def, want to do journalism and so far my only options have been UTS and UWS..until now. Does anyone know if it's a practically based course (which would be great)?

The media department at macquarie is one of the best in Australia, and was one of the first, if not the first, department of its kind. It combines both practical with theoretical with first year being shared across the three Media majors, but specialise 2nd year and onwards.

It is a popular degree, and quite a few people undertake it and the beauty of the course is that there are usually 2 cores/compulsory subjects you take per semester which means you have 2 electives/other subjects to choose from and offers a wider and much better experience/break from the single media study.

I've heard its not that practical though if you want to get into print journalism...

To be perfectly honest, most media degrees won't get you 'practical.' Even getting some experience in the field won't guarantee you're practicality within the media sector as it is an ever changing and packed sector. One thing to keep in mind is that it is an industry where you a) build off your contacts b) build off your portfolio or c) do the hard yards and go through the academic path.

Print journalism isn't restricted to those who complete x, y and z, there are no real limitations to it, and at the same time, there are no real structures to it. Thats the problem, you could get a historian, a sociologist, a psychologist, a lawyer, etc into print journalism. Unlike screen production or multimedia which need somewhat specialised skills, there are a variety of differing levels of interaction and entry into print journalism since it is quite an old and established sector.

Besides, if you wanted practicality, you'd be going to TAFE not university.

Yeah, or a private college.

That's if you just want someone to do only practical stuff. If you want them to be able to research and present info, I'd say that uni is a much better option.

Here's a tip for ya 2006 Macq students, if theres a Macq BOS'er who once did the same units as the one's u are going to choose or someone in the same degree as you, a meet up is always good, share info, help each other with asessment works etc.

And also, it sometimes feel like first day kindergarten, the only friends u got are the ones u already knew and having to sit through the entire lecture with both sides of your seat empty and listening to the canto., mandarin in the air is quite depressing, so say hi, especially if your in the humanities and SCMP units (u have the highes probability)



Alot of the BOS'ers are friendly and seem to socially open to give help. Dont listen to asylum, from what i know, there have been very little stalking action since jlh disappeared, and the old fellas seem to have "Retired" out of it. And if u r really paranoid, dig up some old threads to ID asylum.... i think theres one about trading "something" for exam notes.
