Well, it's difficult to see how the Democrats (at the present time) are going to afford universalising health care, improving education, and other social democratic programs, given impending US recession and massively massive state debt.

I think Obama's hands will be tied, unless he can find big expenditure cuts (military!military!military!), or he's willing to make massively massive debt even more massive
The thing is, a lot of the healthcare and welfare reform can be done simply by rearranging funding.

As it stands, America pays some of the largest amounts per capita on healthcare and welfare. The only reason it sucks is because it's bogged down by free market rhetoric from Republicans, not because it requires more funding.

But yes, money will be tighter, and for that reason more than any other they'll probably need two terms.

Iron: The founding fathers never envisioned GOP abuse of civil rights, the Internet, global trade, or an America this powerful, so whatever.

If Obama fucks up, which he won't, he'll be swiftly replaced by the GOP in 4 years. But he won't; he's not Bush. It's amusing to see neocons decry Obama as a 'socialist' who will destroy America when their own president already spent 8 years raping their country.

McCain is an outstanding candidate - far more qualified, masculine and patriotic than the opponent - but I cant say i've been blow away by the campaign, in terms of message and organisation. There was a moment starting with Palin's acceptance speeches (and ending with her interviews) when it looked like "Country First" was really going to cut through. Powerful, Churchillian defiance. Self-sacrificing love of country, real American values, moral clarity, renewed vigour.
Palin's slip ups knocked the wind out of their sails and the economy was the iceberg. Cut it whatever way you want, Obama got lucky with the financial crisis. People will vote Democrat, not Obama. They still have major doubts about him and a big soft spot for McCain. Also the media want to make sales, and Obama sells.
Having said that, i've been upset with the inconsistency and half-arsedness of the McCain campaign team - for instance, ads awkwardly answering rhetorical questions (Ready to lead?... no)
I just hope that Obama stays as pussy whipped by his party in power as he has been throughout his career (perhaps they will be conscious that the mandate is of party, not personality, and will bully him like everyone else) Though I fear that great evil and disaster lurk behind the mask.

FUCKING HITLER WAS AN AUSTRIAN CORPRAL. FUCKING NEVER AGAIN. NAPOLEON WASNT FRENCH. ER. STALIN WAS A WELL DISCIPLINED BUT BORING GEORGIAN BIDING HIS TIME. SAY NO TO INEXPERIENCED FOREIGNERS. Dark clouds loom

Darn tootin i'm embarrased. None of you see through it. I'm ashamed how our generation has swallowed Obama unquestioningly. Goes to show how vulnerable and prone to manipulation we are. For all university's grand quests for truth, independence, foundation, all we've taken from it is personal prosperity, instant gratification etc. Quick, easy -but essentially unconscious- victims of power
We are fucked
Youz deserve it, not me

As I've stated before, Lincoln is the least qualified President in US history. James Buchanan was far more qualified. Would you have picked Buchanan in 1860 just because he was more experienced than this Congress reject? An even more precarious time in US history, too.

masculine
I agree McCain'd be the most badass President since Theodore Roosevelt, but ultimately, who gives a fuck.

and patriotic than the opponent
How can you possibly judge that?

Didn't we do the same thing with Rudd?
I dont think so. Sure there are comparisons with 'Change' and 'New Leadership', old and young, experience v risk, but McCain is not the incumbent. It has been a big effort of the Obama campaign to unfairly convince Americans that McCain is no different to Bush, despite the hatred and disdain McCain has always had for him.
The fundamentals of this election have obviously been against the GOP. The only chance McCain had was to employ his personality -not his party- to win on foreign policy and leadership. Obama was always going to struggle to sell himself as better than McCain, so he falls back on his default party strengths on the economy. This crisis is just a godsend for him.
What I hate, and i've said it before, is how cowardly he has been in fleshing out a plan of action on climate change. Doesnt even like to mention it, lest the peons think he might risk their selfish, shallow materialism. Rudd by contrast was masterly in using it to tap into the Australian sense of impending doom, linking it with national security and economic prosperity etc. It was rather brave actually, considering that it's the biggest political problem out there which the mob arent very interested in

Whilst you raise a number of salient points, are you wilfully ignorant to how McCain has taken up the bush mantle (now admittedly I saw him debate and whilst I'm as partial to a generic-off as the next punter, there is just a manner of 'same goes same goes' attached to his campaign).

Palin was a dreadful choice. You of all people must be aware of how saccharine and calculated such an appointment was.A mate of mine has come up with a theory in that the GOP knew they were toast and thus brought Palin on board.

Palin's a scapegoat. This entire election has been malhanded. If McCain wished to really be the next level maverick, he'd have thrown the Rovian nonsense out of the window. He didn't. He perpetuated. He's practically giving Obama this election; you know it, I know it.

I'd honestly say the Republican strategy is one of retreating to the shadows. The Dem Congress is at 11%. They're leaving the Democrat ship to fall in upon itself, as it has been threatening to since the Repubs won the majority back in Clinton's time.

The Democrats are absolute gutless fools, and whilst you may despise them, I do not see your criticisms of Obama as valid. The man has played the game, and admirably. He has outroved the GoP. This doesn't mean the end of the world; far from it. The question is, do you feel, if McCain won, would he be McCain from 2000, or McCain from 2008?
