anyone seen it yet? i've been anticipating it for ages, and had no idea when it was on its way here until i checked the papers today and saw that it was on advance screenings this weekend. kewl.

for those that have no clue to what i'm talking about, it's wong kar-wai's follow-up to in the mood for love, and picks up from where that left off.

and just for gits and shiggles, here's all the wong i've seen, ranked.

1. in the mood for love
2. fallen angels
3. chungking express
4. days of being wild
5. ashes of time

i've heard some mixed things about it, seems as if fans of wong's previous work are the only ones likely to really dig it. that's cool by me.

i think i'll have to watch in the mood for love again before i see it, can't remember much of the plot.

....

so, how about that star wars thingy?

I bought it as soon as it came out on DVD in HK, as Wong Kar Wai is my favourite director. Feedback on it has been rather mixed, but predictably so. Chinese audiences have given it the thumbs down, while Western critics have praised it. Personally I liked it. It didn't reach the heights of In the Mood For Love or Chungking Express, but there is still a lot to be enjoyed if you liked In the Mood For Love. There are a few very dodgy looking sci-fi scenes, but as a part of the big picture they work quite well as well. Watch it, enjoy it, but just one word of warning. If you've been getting excited based on the awesome trailers, just lower your expectations a tad.

My ranking of WKW's movies (that I've seen).

1. In the Mood For Love
2. Chungking Express
3. 2046
4. Fallen Angels
5. Days of Being Wild
6. Ashes of Time

I haven't seen As Tears Go By or Happy Together yet. By the way, since obviously people who post on this thread would know about WKW, did anyone go see the WKW feature at Dendy Opera Quays last week?

Don't see it without seeing In the Mood For Love first walrus. You'd definitely enjoy 2046 without ITMFL first, simply because you won't understand the main character as well.. which in this case is very important.

Fo thoze who watched In The Mood For Love, the room no. in which Tony Leung waz livin in waz 2046.

I liked Ashes of Time, while the rest seemed pretty garbage to me. I don't really like the old 50z style thing. Funny how the Honkie movie "My Wife Is 18" made fun of it. When the 18 yr old girl dressed up to be "mature", her husband just sayz to hiz friendz "my wife likez Wong Kar Wai moviez recently".

you only like ashes of time outta all his films? weird, that's the only one i didn't like; in fact, i found it painful. i don't mind a lack of plot, structure, formality etc... i love lynch and resnais and the like, but that film seemed so aimless and dreary - whatever wong was going for, i definitely wasn't feeling it. beautiful photography as always, though.

Ditto icecream. I bought Ashes of Time on Ebay and almost couldn't sit through it. Thank god he redeemed himself with Chungking Express straight afterwards.

LMF- Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, Happy Together and As Tears Go By are all set in the recent past (80s/90s). Give them a go.

The only of Wong Kar-Wai's films that i've seen is In the Mood for Love, of which I thought was absolutely exceptional. Considering how highly I rated it, i'm very interested in 2046, hopefully finding some time outside study and such to see it.

Has anyone seen it at the Dendy in Sydney as yet? I'm interested, but have never been there. Any comments on the cinema?

I think you've answered your own question with the quality of your post.

Oh, and good luck with the HSC. With spelling like that, i'm sure you'll go far.

Be nice mate. I can understand that WKW isn't for everyone. He's very 'arthouse', and most audiences have an aversion to that. He's a film lover's director and almost strictly not for people who watch movies only for the entertainment value.

I don't know. To be honest Days of Being Wild isn't my favourite WKW movie. I'm not even sure why Tony Leung was in it. However it is worth noting that In the Mood For Love is a loose 'sequel' to Days of Being Wild, so the 3 effectively form a trilogy of sorts. The connection? Maggie's character is one and the same.

isnt it supposed to be a sequel of in the mood for love, ... i LOVE his romantic perspective
I think everyone that likes the movie does, which is why 2046 is such a shock to a lot of people expecting more of the same.

My favourite scenes are the ones where they rehearse Maggie confronting the husband. So heartachingly beautiful. *sigh*
