Now before I start I'll emphasise that this thread should not become a debate on the merits/lack thereof of VSU. Rather I'd like to ask a few questions of people who are in university now, or those who will go into university next year:
1. What do you believe is the most effective membership structure for student organisations to take? (Some examples include:
- a tiered membership system, whereby basic membership is some small token amount and gives you access to voting, clubs and societies etc, silver membership gives discounts on events, pool table hire etc, and gold membership gives you silver membership + food discounts, or something to that effect.
- a membership system where you can choose which student organisations you want to join, but there is only one level of membership for each (like the membership you have now).
- a system whereby if you join the union/source, you must also join the src/guild and sports association, if you have one.)

2. What services of your student organisations do you see as unneccessary, which would you like to be upgraded, and what new services would you like to see?

3. Do you vote in university elections? (Yes/No/Only if one of the candidates really appeals to me)

4. Will you be joining any student organisations next year?

1. Since this is not the government we are talking about, probably a tiered or user pay system.

2. Continuation of funds directed specifically towards upgrading the university facilities aka Building Fund. Abolition of resources directed towards political activism that is not directly related to university and should protest be held it be done without university funds.

3. No.

4. Possibly.

FREE FOOD, free breakfast, free lunch and free dinner (u know what i mean by free). It like the best thing they could do.
3. Do you vote in university elections? (Yes/No/Only if one of the candidates really appeals to me)
No, we might have hang around in uni for 4 years and then most of us are goners. so there is no point voting.
4. Will you be joining any student organisations next year?
no, there arent any student organisations that are decent to join.

Tiered. I support the user-pays approach. It ultimately is to the benefit of all parties (both students and the organisations)

2. What services of your student organisations do you see as unneccessary, which would you like to be upgraded, and what new services would you like to see?
Cut out the political crap. They are organisations that should represent all students. There is no reason why their services cannot be delivered in a politically impartial manner.
I would love to see the privatisation of food services.

3. Do you vote in university elections? (Yes/No/Only if one of the candidates really appeals to me)
Yes.

4. Will you be joining any student organisations next year?
Will not join any of the 3 major student organisations at USYD next year.
I will however continue my membership with SULC.

1. For societies you should just join what you want to join, and everyone in the society enters at the the same level. Additionally throw in extra money for a card of some sort that gets you discounts on food, unibar, social events etc IF YOURE INTERESTED AND THINK YOULL BENEFIT purchase it.. otherwise just dont bother.
All smiles.

2. no. more. fucking. politics. I WANT TO WALK DOWN THE UNI WALK IN PEACE! stop funding fucking hippies to cut down trees to make ridiculous ammounts of fliers and advertise their hyporcritical greeny bullshit. please. Save our Israel? Ugh, dont make me shove that kippah down your throat to shut you up.
Seriously..not my problems, not my intrests, why should i be funding these pests?
And for fucks sake make uni food cheaper! 12 bucks for a decent foccacia, cooome on! Why is it the only food i can afford is a hardened chicken wing with tub mayonaise :(
More trivia nights. More free pancakes. MORE ENTERTAINMENT.. ok so we get a band on the library lawn like once a week, this doesnt cut it!

3. No. Never. Wankers. Dont touch me. And my resume is still more impressive than yours...

4. Was a waste of money this year, but next year I will join up again and actually get involved. Sometimes it really seems worth it.

Building funds be integrated into course fees, as they're essential infrastructure - particularly computers as the internet and printing charges are really expensive and there's not enough computers around the place.
Building funds cover the repair and maintenance of the three union buildings at USYD. Not computers the internet or printing which is all under the university.

1. Tiered.

2. Funding for protests, get it from the protestors.

3. Union yes, SRC typically not, Sports Union would never consider it.

4. Union at least, if its tiered what level depends on the benefits and cost.

1.) iam split between tiered and what we have now[ i think UOW is going for tiered with like gold membership, but that might have changed recently]. Tiered allows people to select stuff to pay for that they are going to use, or that they think is fair.[ Gold should be free, or discounted pool and shiz] But what we have now means alot more people are contributing. If its a choice between all or nothing[like we have now] alot of people who would have gone silver membership will pay the equivilent of gold, meaning more funding for fitness centers, political stuff and awareness programs.

2.) I respect peoples right to choice, but some things bennefit a very small minority that has no real gain for the uni. "Womyn's space"and society[y? stupid women cant spell] and queer space/ society can go, i see no reason why women or homosexuals should feel like they need to segregate themselves and having these buildings and groups does not appeal to most applicants. Something like an ethnic officer[altough catering to a minority, this would could be a deciding factor for applicants] which helps people unfamiliar with australian life or people who feel descriminated against because of race are justified.

Although i dont much like organised religion [ islam especially] i do recognise their need for their own groups, what i dont support is having segregated elitist christian buildings and shit, if you need a churchy meeting just use an unused lecture theater. If you need a prayer room to prostate in, if there is an unused room, go for it. If not i am not going to fund you to do something like that. Go pray in one of our lovely campus gardens or something.

Disabled services are allways justifed, as are their support groups.

3.) no, i have a representative who tells me if he really wants me to vote on something or if there is an important issue coming up[hasnt happened yet] and if that happens i will vote, if not all things being equal i dont see a really bad candidate ever getting in.

4.) organisations like WUSA or what? i think i am probably allready part of one or two organisations and next year i have plans of joining a particular one with friends, so yeah.

Looks like UoW is getting off pretty lightly compared to the other uni's... now i see why VSU was such a big deal[which i am against BTW]
if we all get gold membership it wont make a difference anyways, dont be a leech guys, give back to the community.
