Okay well i've gone to mah careers advisor n asked if there were cadetships for actuarial studies in unsw n she goes there r only co-op programs. So if i make it into commerce with a major in actuarial, do we start getting the money from first yr? Or second year wen we start choosing our majors? And also, are co-op's always worth about $13k or does it vary?

How much you get varies year to year, and is set by a directions board. Each degree (sometimes) gets differing amounts when you start Industrial Training.

1st year $11,400 (approx.)
2nd year $13,400
3rd year $13,400
4th year $15,400 (approx.)

Its works out to be $13,400 per year, but they withold around $2k (your first 4 pays) in first year and give it to you as a bonus upon completion in 4th year. Actuarial Co-op is really, really good (but its a tough subject).

If there are drop outs in the co-op program they might advertise vacancies, and offer the scholarship to someone else.

It varies year to year depending on how many sponsors there are. But yes there aren't many.

For accounting and actuary its around 10-15 spots a year each (but actuary get better sponsors). Usually there are a couple of actuaries that drop out each year because actuary may not really be their thing.

I didnt apply for Co-op in high school, but a few of my friends suggested I apply when I was in first year and thats what I did. In April, a new sponsor joined and a new spot became available.

wow! i remember there were only 2 spots last yr and i think Diane got one.

ppl drop out of actuarial cz they dont get the marks in subsequent yrs.

i reckon there are a lot of shortlisted actuarial ppl still doing actuarial. so it doesnt mean that if there are vacancies you have a good chance - there is a LOT of competition for actuarial (i should know cz i tried too)

actuarial is good cz u learn finance stuff in IT too. there are many successful actuarial co-ops headhunted for IB work. >.<

Nope. One of my friends did Accounting Co-op and told me about it.
It was advertised in Week 5 in all the first year accounting lectures and tutorials and I then applied for it.

If there's a vacancy, they usually advertise it in the lectures and tutorials so that everyone doing the subject knows about it and has a chance to apply.

Yeah ppl drop out of actuarial because its tough to get the 65 in all the subjects.
Accounting on the on the hand is pretty decent because the subject itself is not particularly difficult.

Actuary Co-ops are very much sought after because you will not find better equipped actuary/finance graduates anwhere else (since there are no actuary cadetships and work experience/interships are very limited).
