It's really not that much more difficult than Normal units.

Except maybe the final exam is harder. Content learnt is essentially the same.

And enjoy your 8am lectures.

do you like maths?

if no, then why do it - it may only decrease your GPA.
if yes, go for it =)

Mate you can basically do whatever you want. I did Chem life sciences in 1st year without having HSC chem behind me and I too was advised to not do it. If you think you can pass the subject then go ahead.

But I'm pretty sure I need special permission.
I had to get special permission for CHEM1901 and 1902 because I missed 95 by .25
If you aren't prepared to dedicate a fair bit of time into Maths, then the Normal units are probably best for you.

I know somebody who State ranked Extension 1 and did very well in Extension 2, and still did normal.

Of course, they got HD.

for people who did 4u maths and were decent at it will find normal maths a joke, i know of someone who did not go to one lecture
or one tute, only studied the night before each quiz and test and got a credit in norm maths.

The differences are bigger in third year. In first year the main difference is the detail/amount of proofs they go into. The advanced subjects without a regular partner were generally much harder than the ones which had a regular version.
