The scaled mark comes from the Raw mark

There are 2 paths

Raw Mark --> Aligning --> Aligned Mark

Raw Mark --> Scaling --> Scaled mark

You do not get told your scaled mark. The scaling is done by UAC.

So, by the uai seeker, say I get aligned marks of 85 for english, that scales to 80.8, then sdd, 90->91, then chem, 80->78.8, maths 3u, 90->90.2, 4u, 85->90.4. That aggregates to 431.2 which uai seeker says probably is a uai of 97.70.

Your table is quite accurate by the looks of it :) I feel a bit more confident :p.

wtf, 498.2 aggregate, must be like 4u english, 4u maths, and classical greek extension :D

Wait...Is this how the process goes?
Assessment marks are moderated then added with the raw exam mark to give the HSC mark. Then the HSC mark goes one step further to become 'aligned' to performance bands. Then UAC takes the aligned marks and scales them (usually down) to what is then called a 'scaled mark'.
Then 10 units of scaled marks are summed up to give an aggregate which is then used to rank and make the UAI.

Not exactly.

The HSC exam is aligned.

The assessment marks are moderated.

The end result is a HSC mark which is the average of the 2. The HSC mark does not undergo aligning. It in fact is the average of the 2 aligned marks.

The UAC takes the raw mark and scales it. -Not- the aligned marked.

The aggregate is the sum of the best 8 units plus 2 units of english.

The difference between them varies across courses (and even within a single course). Tables of quivalencies are published in the Technical Committee's Report on the Scaling of the HSC each year (quick links - 2001 and 2002).
Why does the documents talk about Aligned marks in the scaling table?
And why are all the 'raw' marks in the table so high?

That's the one. Raw HSC mark = average of raw exam mark and initial moderated assessment mark.

Ragerunner's further explanation is accurate... to clarify, because I love diagrams -

Mein gott, that's ugly. But you should be able to see what's happening now! :)

Because the document provides equivalencies between aligned marks and scaled marks. It doesn't provide any information about raw marks...

Why don't they just align the Raw HSC mark instead of breaking it up into two components?

Are there any documents that assist you in estimating what you align marks would be?

Nice diagram btw.

*shrug* The Board decides that you should know your exam and assessment marks as well, even though they've messed about with them.

Excerpts from the standards packages and your teachers. That's all.
