Dice question is 1, and lying question is friday if I recall correctly.

You can draw out the options for dice=) but its clearly true because 1 and 6 will both have equal probability of 0->5 difference, 2 and 5 will be more likely to have 1, 3 and 4 will be more likely to have 1 or 2
ergo, 1.

no it cant... in ryrgrbr: the second r occurs between the first and the third, but theres a fourth r outside first and third, so its banned(well strictly speaking anyway since theres nothing said about same colors in the rules)
Yeah I realised that as I was walking to school this morning (how sad :().

I think I ended up with 103 and I really wanted to get three HD's this year :(

Oh well my one for Science, and probable one for Chemistry (well my average for it is a HD and I dont want to disturb it) will do.

Okay say if your as dumb as me XD

The teachers and the booklet itself say that it's bad to guess in the last section 21-30 because you will get a 0 if you get it wrong. But why does the booklet print "If your total for this section is less than 30, you will score 30 marks"?? And also the cap text "MINIMUM 30 MARKS FOR THIS SECTION GUARANTEED"

So in other words, you can just guess the last section and still get 30 if you got all 0's by guessing??

Yes.

Stastically if you dont answer any, it pays off to guess 1 OR 2 (depending how lucky you feel) of the last 10.

If you guess 1:

1/5 chance you will get 5 extra marks
4/5 you wont get any extra marks (ie it will be brought to 3 to bring the minimum to 30)

Average gain: 1 mark.

If you guess 2:
1/25 of getting 10 exta marks
2/5 of getting 2 extra marks (1 right, 1 wrong)
14/25 of getting 0 extra marks.

Average gain:0.8 marks.

i think i would've been better off if i didn't know any questions, then i could've guessed and got some right!
i attempted 4 questions out of the third section, but when i got out, people told me i was wrong :(
oh dear, i really wanted at least a distinction this year... i haven't had a distinction since year 10.
i got a prize (higher than high distinction - yay!) in year 8, but year 8 doesn't count when you apply for scholarships :(

bah hideous...
Quite possible it's another top3% distinction =/...
Should've done a few practice questions before hand...

Are these competition things worth anything apart [excluding prize/medal level]?

btw Xayma I'd say you should go for a bit more than that provided you can eliminate a few wrong answers... getting 105/150 is at the end rather worthless... I should know...

Estel thats why I prefered the old method where you lost marks, because then at least the odd were with you if you eliminated two, here you need to elimate 3 to have a reasonable chance.

Well they're changing it again [I think] next year to 3 for 1-10, 4 for 11-20 and 5 for 21-30 with no marks deducted for incorrect responses and 25-30 having integer solutions between 1-999.

Reminds me of the Aus Olympiad... should be fun :p
[EDIT: I forget... almost everyone here won't be doing it :p]

No it wouldn't be, as you are only marked against your year.

It should require more marks to get a HD in yr 12 then year 11 (assuming the competition is of equal standard)

Yeah they're not combined then marked, they are marked and scaled independently for each grade, and since it is the same paper, yr 12 are gonna do better

In Yr 8 and 10 for the years I did it 106-108 was sufficient, if that helps.

can someone inform me here.. why would you need that an AMC certificate? does it really make a difference when you apply for employment?

I presume getting one of those prize certificates/medal wouldn't hurt your CV...

And I think I got 107, so I might get my HD this year.
