Any B.A International Relations students!??? (1 Viewer)

Hey all!
I'm a year 12 student from Bathurst currently doing my HSC and am interested in doing B.A InternationaL Relations next year! Was just wondering what the course leads into employment wise..is it jst the diplomatic line!??
I'm still iffy bout what i wanna do so i don't know if i'd be better off doing combined arts/ economics coz it's broader !!!
Any advice, comments , suggestions would be strongly appreciated!

I would advise agaisnt doing a BA IR, that is a named specialisation as it is very restrictive eg you must do a language and you must do IR. Also it can not be combined. As such the career options are limited (only one graduate per year is accepted by DFAT).

My advice given your interest in IR is combined arts of some desription. Economics is good however be warned that EMET is not a walk in the park (weary words from someone who just checked their result).

I was afraid that it might be too limitied. In that case I might look towards the combined B.A Arts/ Economics degree. Yeh, I know economics is challenging but i find it interesting and hopefully that will keep me interested and doing my work!

Combined degrees are always good value, I've heard them termed a bulk-buy special, in that you get two degrees but spend the time needed to get 1.3 degrees sperately.

Yes but only nut cases do that.... for almost all combinations it is 1.3-1.5 eg second degree at half price.... less if you pay in the next ten minutes by credit card.

OK it was really not nice to come out and say it like that.

See I did 3 u maths in yr 11, so I don't really want to do commerce and plus there are so many comm grads....actuary expects more of you, and I've got the marks already, so...why not. And I've always wanted to do law.

The workload for actu/law is pretty intense, ie incredibly intense. Law is a heavy load in itself and actu hard work. Did you do 3u or 4u maths in year12?

What is DFAT?

Defence Foriegn Affairs and Trade, the department over which the Foriegn Minister presides. The only Australian employer of diplomats.

They accept ONE graduate from the country per year for their graduate program, as a resulty competition is intense. eg every arts and/or law student in canberra wants the job.

That said there are also jobs with ASIO, ASIS, ONA etc etc.

More seriously I also want to do evrything eg after graduating with Arts (International relations + contemporary Europe) and Economics (economics + crappy math + economic developement). I'd like to come back and do masters of a doctorate in diplomacy/grand strategy and undergrad psychology, law and another arts this time with philosophy and spanish. Lol the tyranny of choice?

That said the father of a girl on my old floor at Fenner had nine undergraduate degrees.

Geez, 9 undergraduate degrees?! Lol, that will probably be me someday, I'm interested in too many things. I just like to learn, I have no idea of what I want to do for a job!

how old was he when he graduated?!
Anyway, in the perfect world I'd be doing liberal studies, or visual arts or music or something....however, knowing my lack of talent in those fields I'll end on the streets.

neo dudey dude, you do realise a lot of actuaries go overseas because that's where the money is....and from there it's just a short jump to diplomacy. I would really love to go to Europe and Asia for a bit, work there...you know, Australia is lovely but I don't want to spend the rest of my life staring at koala bums, which used to happen a lot seeing as I lived across the street from a national park. *sigh.
