assesment help: King Lear readings (1 Viewer)

Heya,
I've got an assesment in which as a director of a play I have to write a speech to the actresses who play Cordelia, Gonerill and Regan that explains how I want them to act to portray my reading of the play.
I was wondering if n e one out there had n e suggestions on staging and dramatic techniques that would create more sympathy for Gonerill and Regan, using the reading of family drama?

So Its kinda going with the reading that Lear plays the sisters off eachother in the begining and initiates sibbling jealousy etc.

Emphasise the scene where they're trying to outdo one another at the start, especially Lear's reaction to them. Staging - spotlights would work! A spotlight on the character speaking might indicate that they're being highlighted/favoured..

Staging.. I don't know if you mean set, but something like a red carpet would be neat. Positioning the sisters on either side of the stage rather than next to each other - or next to each other directly in front of Lear.

just a thought....maybe to impliment the idea of Gonerill and how she has feelings for the edmund...therefore giving a bad reputation for the family....breaking conventions of society (in 2 ways: 1. already mentioned 2. trying to take control of the family-man's job)

i think when gonerill and regan are contesting over edmond's love, and for lear's land, perhaps you could make us sympathetic towards them by interpreting their evil actions as really just an attempt to outdo each other

make goneril and regan physically less intimidating......make cordelia bigger in comparison
