I think its probably down to the individual teacher. Most of my teachers will do that, I think its important to know your teachers well enough to know weather they would check it over or not. But as has been said, most people just write them and hope for the best without teacher advice. If something is not set under exam conditions then I think the teachers can help.

For english, our teacher asked the class to write an essay as practise for our assessment. It was on a different topic, but she marked it as if it were an assessment. It was only homework so the people who didn't hand it in will be disadvantaged but its their own choice.

i have never had problems about teachers marking assingments beforehand.
actually, one of my teachers at uni is offering to read our assingments beforehand , before he marks it!!!!!!
