hello everyone!

this must be the happiest day of my life!

Free downloads and more!

alrighty then.. Telstra is going to introduce NEW internet plans starting from tomorrow.

Since I'm on cable, i'll just state mine ;)

Telstra Broadband Cable now has an unlimited plan

Copied from telstra:
In order to provide the best broadband experience we can to all our customers, there are some special terms and conditions for users on our Unlimited* plans.
If you choose one of our Unlimited* plans, your speed may be slowed to 64kbps once you exceed 10GB of usage during a calendar month. As with all our BigPond Broadband plans, you will need to adhere to our Acceptable Use Policy.

*Speed may be slowed to 64kbps after 10GB; Service cannot be used for unauthorised purposes set out in the Acceptable Use Policy(AUP).

Although there isn't confirmation on the pricing yet, I have called Telstra billing and they said $69.95 per month.

Talk about great value!

What's more is that now instead of paying an additional $11 for extra users, it now costs $1

Answer
From 8 December, BigPond will simplify its plan structures by offering one set of plans to both businesses and residential customers. The key features of the new plans are:

Prices for ADSL and Cable 5GB and 10GB plans have been reduced
Prices for additional users have been reduced from $11 per user per month to $1 per user per month
Increase in available additional users for residential memberss from 2 to 7 users (a total of 8 users who can have their own username and password and email address)
A new ADSL plan with 3GB usage allowance and upload/download speeds of up to 1500 kbps/ up to 256 kbps.
Contract periods will be 12 or 24 months
New Casual plans (available only on 24 month contracts) offer customers the ability to pay for what they use. Casual plans exclude any usage allowance and are suitable for light users who are interested in experiencing the blistering speed of broadband.

This is undoubtly fantastic news for us telstra users :D even after the free download bonanza over the weekend, and the extended 12 hours of downloading!

Telstra has not written down the pricing, but let's just hope it stays at $69.95 :)

here's the link from telstra FAQ officially.. its being hammered so be patient:

alrighty then, good news for us cable users! w00t w00t! ADSL.. well therer are better plans out there, but u can't say NO to cable! :D :D :D

Excellent news there psycho_mushy.

* Uncapped cable
* 10GB per month (3.3x more than the current quota)
* Line capped to 64kbps after exceeding the quota
* $69.95
* $1 per node, on a home LAN

Very good value IMO, excellent. Even if the cost is $74.95 or $84.95, it's very good service for the pings (definately a bonus for gamers) and those who require fast download speeds for video streams etc. Telstra are finally winning back their customers' loyalty and userbase, from the ADSL ISPs.

Which translates to more porno for you, and more.

This line bothers me, as I'm sure they are disallowing game and file servers to be running - for "unauthorised purposes". It wouldn't surprise me to see Telstra changing their AUP on and off to suit their own needs.
A new ADSL plan with 3GB usage allowance and upload/download speeds of up to 1500 kbps/ up to 256 kbps.
Another step in the right direction, however I would have liked to have seen an equally tempting offer of 5-10GB per month, on 1500/512 plans.

ADSL is an alternative, there will always be some cable-goers and some ADSL-goers. If you prefer to have a large quota, but don't mind the slower speeds, then ADSL would be for you. Whereas the cablers would be inclined to download at faster speeds with a 'limited' quota. :)

Telstra wrings changes

Telstra's recent email disaster has claimed its first victim, with BigPond chief Justin Milne having his operational responsibilities stripped from January 1, barely a year after being poached from internet rival OzEmail.

The move comes ahead of Monday's announcement of sweeping changes to the pricing of its internet services.

This will see the removal of controversial download limits on its high-speed internet services, which earn the company almost $100 million a year.

Telstra will drop its prices on most of its internet services, insiders say. Customers will be given the option of taking new plans, which throttle back broadband speed after certain download limits have been met, or sticking with Telstra's original plans.

Mr Milne's shift was revealed internally yesterday.

A Telstra email from wholesale and internet chief Bruce Akhurst said: "Effective in the new year, Philip Jones will take up the newly created position of managing director of operations, BigPond.

"Philip will be responsible for BigPond's IT, technology, service provision and call centres. Philip Jones comes to this role from Telstra Business & Government, where he has been executive director, customer care.

"Philip joined Telstra in 1994 and has occupied various senior management, commercial and operating roles."

Mr Milne will be left with content, product sales and marketing. But last night he claimed the move as a victory.

"This is something I have been asking Bruce for and I having been talking about this for a while. I have been asking for an effective chief operating officer for a while. I am stoked," Mr Milne said.

Mr Milne and Mr Jones will report directly to Mr Akhurst.

The deficiencies of Telstra's internet network were laid bare when its 1.6 million internet subscribers started receiving email up to a month late. Telstra initially blamed a new digital virus but later confessed that it had underinvested in its internet network capacity.

Telstra chief executive Ziggy Switkowski has promised $100 million to fix the problems.

Mr Milne is understood to have spoken to the Telstra board last week about his first year at the helm of Telstra's internet business.

Macquarie Bank analyst Scott Ryall said Telstra was poised to earn $430 million from broadband this financial year. Mr Milne has previously said that about 20 per cent of Telstra's high-speed internet revenue comes from payments for extra downloads.

The price cuts reflect recent comments from Telstra management that the company is determined to staunch the loss of market share.

Telstra to go unlimited
Simon Wright | Today, 3:00 pm | Telstra
BigPond will introduce new psuedo-unlimited download plans from tomorrow alongside its maligned capped download plans.

The change follows a weekend of free downloads for BigPond users, while the telco undertakes a "major network upgrade", affecting the usage meter.

From Monday, new plans will be introduced which will have a 10GB usage limit, followed by unlimited usage at capped speeds of 64Kbit/s.

However Telstra also plans to introduce plans with a 0MB download allowance, and per megabyte rates of 19.9c per MB, exposing customers to an extreme risk of running up large bills. 1GB at this rate would cost $199, plus the plan fee. Telstra will clamp customers into two year contracts for these plans.

Several Whirlpool users have posted links to a BigPond Customer Service website with FAQ information on the changes.

OPINION | If this news is true, the move shows that the publicity campaign run by Whirlpool members against BigPond's restrictive download caps has proven effective. It also shows the level of desperation among the ranks of Telstra management following the extraordinary brand damage from BigPond's month-long email failure.

It's also a cunning move on BigPond's part to undermine the launch of Optus ADSL in March, while at the same time making its under-utilised cable network more compelling. With what may turn out to be a 10GB plan at reasonable pricing, coupled with the extreme speed of cable (10Mbit/s compared to ADSL's maximum 1.5Mbit/s), cable is now set to claw back its dwindling market share compared to ADSL.

Of course, informed consumers won't be swayed by any changes to Telstra's ADSL pricing, as substantially better value offers are already available on the market

Yes, but iiNet's 72kbps > 64kbps > 28kbps, albeit on ADSL.

64kbps Telstra over 28kbps Optus is a no brainer though.

Why would I be jealous? I have Telstra Cable and iiNet ADSL. I've been a Telstra customer for longer than you have been (August 1999) up until now (December 2003), which makes it about 40 months. I am leaving Telstra at the end of this year, even though they have changed their plans, quota and terms, to stay with iiNet ADSL (12/8GB peak and off-peak), data travelling through the PIPE is free, intrastate transfers between PIPE and iiNet users are free, among other advantages which have been already mentioned in other threads; my other posts. In my time with Telstra I have gone through three cable modems, two Nortel Networks modems DOCSIS compliant from 2001-2003 and one Motorola CyberSUFR (black) non-DOCSIS compliant modem in 1999-2000. I don't have anything to be jealous about because I am having the best of both worlds.

Ask me again, who's jealous of whom? ;)

Fixed up the spelling, complaint = compliant.

Actually, you're wrong about that PM. The day Telstra Cable customers run 130GB+ transfers a month, will be the day I will be jealous of you. Telstra customers are given 10GB per month, if I'm able to transfer 100GB+ per month, you can do the math, it's a tenfold increase in quota.

Telstra is faster, ask yourself why? It is a completely different communications medium. Sure it's 10Mbit, but we're comparing apples to oranges - optical fibres transmitting at the speed of light compared to what? Copper phone lines that have been laid for decades? Please.

ADSL technology, whilst still at 1.5Mbit is definately faster than dial-up, there's no contest. However in comparison to Cable, I do understand that there is a very large difference in terms of speed especially if you are comparing an uncapped, fibre optic line with an exchange limited, 512/128 connection, running off twisted pairs of copper.

Cable customers can enjoy 64kbps after they have downloaded 10GB, which, by the way - includes uploads. ADSL customers have the luxory of being able to upload constantly, without fear of any of that data contributing towards their monthly quota.

If my maths is correct, if I am on ADSL, I could transfer four times as much data as you could in one month, given Telstra's 10GB usage quota, I would say that 33% if not 50% of that data will be outgoing - so you're virtually left with 5GB per month, maybe even 7-8GB if you're not much of an uploader (you do know that it's a two-way transmission).

Given that ADSL uploads are free, {16*60*60*24} / (1024/1024) * 30 works out to be 39.55078125GB (or 40GB). This would be eight times the maximum data allowed, or transferrable on a Telstra plan, without counting any excess data transmitted at 64kbps (but who worries about 64kbps, it's not much faster than dialup-56kbps anyway).

I would still be able to leave my ADSL connection running concurrently with my Telstra Cable connection, reaping the benefits of 10GB of quota at 10Mbps, exceeding the usage and being limited to 64kbps, whilst still maintaining a data transfer, hopping onto an ADSL connection with a 20GB monthly transfer quota, while fxping hundreds of gigabytes to other PIPE users and uploading 40GB of data per month, constantly, each and every month - that works out to be your Telstra quota, which is intended to be used over one working month - eaten up by me in 1 week (10GB per week, 40GB per month) simply in terms of uploads.

If you want to include all of the downloads, you would be looking at in excess of 200GB per month - with the inclusion of Telstra BigPond's 10GB agreed quota, any gigabytes downloadable (and shaped at 64kbps), ADSL's 20GB per month, data which is being tunnelled through the PIPE, data transferred within and between the iiNet network (intrastate traffic, not interstate) as well as being capped to 72kbps (72kbps > 64kbps) and being able to download an additional 10GB (which is, by the way, your monthly quota on Telstra) as iiNet customers are able to download 150% of their quota before being shaped to 33kbps.

Checkmate. ;)
umm... how come u had so many cable modems?
did they overheat or something?
Overheating problems with the original Motorola Modem, power supply issues, powerpacks failing (not the fault of the modem) however it had to be completely replaced with the new Nortel Networks modem when Telstra customers migrated onto the DOCSIS network.

ADSL in fact has the potential to go faster than 1.5 Megabits, i use to know some dude who had ADSL at 3 megabits, probably Telstra might update the exchanges and bring up the 1.5 megabits to 3 :p...

I don't even think 30 GB will be enough for me let alone, if we were true blue unlimited i'll be doing 90 gigs a month , and no there's no porn in that usage, but i'll be downloading what i want as well as some other stuff, and hell if it's Longhorn BETA Time, i'll be using more than 90 gigs lol...

Here's to hoping it'll come in the next few years, along with Xbox 2 and the PS3 - Network gaming on the PS2 is great, but I would still like to have Internet connectivity at greater speeds, mmm 3Mbit :)
and no there's no porn in that usage
There's no porn in my usage either.

Ditto. I want DVD Beta releases of Longhorn that I can install in 5-10 minutes, none of this 15-20 minute clean install crap :p
