Re: Australian Politics Chatter Thread

You have to admit, the CLP did orchestrate their campaigns cleverly, especially in Fannie Bay, Fong Lim and Braitling. Candidate recognition was of great importance in this election, and as the CLP ran two federal candidates (Tollner in Fong Lim and Giles in Braitling) and a fromer Mayor (Lambert in Fannie Bay) which means that they did not have to worry too much about candidate promotion. I think that the appeal Claire Martin had may have been a little understated and was sorely missed by the ALP in this election. I thought the CLP would have won ten seats, but the possibility of twelve, and a hung parliament is alot more than what I and many others thought.

No you're wrong!
The Liberals are run by rich white people! Unlike the ALP with Kevin Rudd who..err...also happens to be rich...and white...

I'm willing to call the election for Labor now.

New Legislative Assembly will be:
ALP 13
CLP 11
IND 1

Government with a 1 seat majority.
All it takes is an ALP member resigning or going under a bus and there's a government determining by-election.

I liked the comment on Insiders: "In one day the CLP has gone from being able to fit their entire parliamentary team into one taxi, to coming within striking distance of forming Government"

I prefered the comment that, given the size of the electorates, a seat can be won or lost if one greek family change their minds.
Pretty shocking result though.

Yeh, seats have about ~5000 voters. Local Council elections here are bigger.
It leads to very high personal votes for territory MPs. When one retires you usually get very large swings.

Re: Australian Politics Chatter Thread

Western Australian state election is definately winnable for the Libs.

Westpoll 50-50 2PP

WA Newspoll 51-49 2PP to Labor

Revived Libs catching Premier

A SWING against Labor is on in the west, with a resurgent Opposition now neck-and-neck with a shaky Carpenter Government.

The first Newspoll of the September 6 state election campaign shows newly installed Liberal leader Colin Barnett has slashed the huge lead Premier Alan Carpenter enjoyed as preferred premier over his previous opponent, the disgraced Troy Buswell.

Costello won't challenge

Doesn't really change anything though. He was never going to challenge. He still hasn't ruled out staying in politics. If he does stay, Nelson will pretty much have no choice but to resign and give Costello the leadership.
