B Science (Advanced) and B Science (1 Viewer)

hey,

It has been stated that there is no real difference between B Science (Advanced) and B Science ... i would prefer to do B Science (Advanced) but if i fail the UAI cutoff i would settle with B Science ...

Is it difficult to switch between the two courses? or failing that can honours be done through B Science ...

Subject to certain conditions, a student may be permitted to continue into a fourth year to complete an honours degree.

for advanced science you need a credit average to get through to the fourth year. you're enrolled as a science student anyway, and if you dont maintain a credit average you dont get awarded b. sc (adv).

Same thing basically. Advanced science just has integrated honours, and some more majors that you can do. You can still do advanced subjects in normal Bsc. Honours can be done through science aswell, you just need a 65 average. It's quite easy to switch between courses, credit average should suffice.

Im quite sure that you dont get the 'advanced' bit on your testamur. You either get Bsc or Bsc (Hons). With the first one being for a Bsc, and the 2nd one for advanced science.

It's still cool to get into Advanced science though But seriously NO real difference. Except you can choose to go to Singapore in second year for a short period of time.

yeah i would be very happy if i could get into Advanced Science ... but im just covering all of my options unless i miss the cutoff - this year 88. im very certain that i'll get the UAI for Science but the 90 is looking rather elusive at the moment (poor results for English and mediocre results for chemistry) ...

yeah but i am going to try very hard to get into Advanced Science

Alternatively get into Medical Science, but ONLY if you know you want to major in the field of medical sciences.

I was looking at choosing medical science, but am quite glad in my case that I didn't, seeing as now i want to do one major in mathematics, and one in the medical sciences field.

Bsc(adv) may sound better because of word "advanced" but the course doesnt have any flexibility. unless you like the title "advanced" I reckon Bsc is much better.

Yeah, I have to agree with you on that one.

Seriously, if you did choose b sci advanced, what you'll see is that you're 'literally' forced to do some boring lecture class that you must do, plus I believe you need to complete even more electives than b sci.

So...if you want flexibility, head into b sci, that's what i did, since it really looked like a 'set' degree, rather than a flexible one.

Plus, if you head into b sci, you can choose from a really wide range of majors + electives, and if you don't like this degree, there isn't much to lose, since it's all first year sci degrees are practically the same.

bsc(adv) is just a bsc anyway. You can make it as flexible as you want.

There are people who do Honours in Maths and Physics in the general BSc degree.

UNSW will be offering a BCom/BSc (Adv Sci) either next yr or the yr after that. It may not be that popular as not all Commerce students want to do Honours.

you can still undertake an advanced sci study plan with com/sc...but thats pretty hectic stuff if you're doing actuary.

i guess its a question of how hard you want to work during uni, because doing advanced science implies that you have to do the advanced level subjects. take the maths and finance plan in adv sci - math1151 wtf?

dan, there is no difference between bsc or bsc (adv) on ur testamur. (unless u do honours).

The whole advanced sci thing is a gimmick. There are so many Adv Sci degree holders that I doubt that it counts for much...recruiters will have a flick through your results so i doubt whether "adv sci" really makes a difference.

They're scrapping the M&F plan in the next couple of yrs. It's being replaced by an Advanced Maths specialisation which atm requires either exceptional achievements in mathematics at high school (olympaid) or a HD average in maths subjects.

That already exists.

And besides if you drop out to finish ur adv sci degree after 3rd yr, its the same as bsc. Your testamur never states advanced.

Atm Adv Maths is just another specialisation in the advanced science degree (like chemistry, physics, etc).

From either next yr or the yr afterwards, the 2 new advanced degrees will be:

1. BSc (Advanced Science) <--------- all science majors except for maths/stats
2. BSc (Advanced Mathematics) <--------- maths/stats majors
