Id say that even though the question had radius as being constant, its probably gonna be one of those "mark it easier or harder depending on how good or bad people do in the rest of the paper" questions....

Hmm so its probably something like:

1 mark - identify that mass increases as velocity increases
1 mark - identify that magnetic field must increases to balance this out
1 mark - shows time dilation equation and how M -> infinity
1 mark - MV^2 / r = qvb

what juber explained seems like the ideal answer to me, as long as you elaborated
not in a real synchroton but they managed to build this secret one at board of studies student torture lab that does make particles go in PERFERCT circles, so :p

by the way, how did you get to work at fermi lab for work exp?

thanks for that juber, i'm positive i got full marks for that question! Btw your notes really helped me for quanta to quarks. thanks again.

juber it said in the question that it went round in a circle of constant radius
hardly rocket science

I got full marks unless they mark me down for also talking about
ma = qvb if the synchrotron is to function like a linear accelerator, which they do.

Yes, well hearing that now it makes sense, but not having the question in front of me, and having misread / not read it during the exam means that I have no memory of it! lol

(hence I wasted my time bitching about it! haha)

Shit. I should try to understand the question in the first place before I write an answer :p

according to this i got full marks... i never actually mentioned centripetal force... never found it essential even though it does go in a fixed radius or whatever...
my thought was... becuase the question mentiones the particles are going' near light speed' it has more to do with relativity
so used the mass dilation, time dilation, e=mc^2 and f= ma formulas..explaining each and how they relate
stupid number of lines... put me off..i ended up filling the whoole page...
fingers crossed
good luck everyone...

if i can get one for mass dilation and increase in magnetic field to keep elctron in orbit i would get at most 2 marks
